Knights Women's Volleyball Defeated by LIU Post on Senior Night

Brookville, N.Y. (November 13, 2012) – The Knights women's volleyball team wrapped up its 2012 season with a straight-set loss on Senior Night to the LIU Post Pioneers, in a game relocated to the campus of LIU Post in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Prior to the game, four-year seniors Suzanne Byrne and Erin Eckes were honored for their hard work and dedication throughout their careers at Queens College. Byrne (Richmond, B.C./St. Patrick) was named Outstanding Freshman for the QC Knights volleyball program during the 2009-2010 year and was eventually tabbed as the team captain. Eckes (Oconomowoc, Wisc./Oconomowoc)  was primarily used as the Libero during her time here.

Once the ceremonies were completed, it was the Knights jumping ahead 6-1 in the first frame, only to see the lead dissipate little by little as they end up falling in the first set 25-20. The Knights hung tough with the Pioneers in the second set before LIU Post went on an 8-0 run to take the set 25-17. In what would be the third and final set of the night and the 2012 Knights regular season,  QC could not recover from the multiple scoring streaks LIU Post went on in the last set, a set which the Knights would lose 25-14.

Byrne, in her final game as a Queens College Knight, killed the ball five times and dug it up 11 times during the course of the match. The five kills helped Byrne end her final year with 205 kills this season, and the 11 digs gave her a team-high 322 on the season.  Eckes dug the ball out nine times tonight, putting her season total at 58 digs.
