The Queens College volleyball team got off to a fast start as
they took the first set before losing the next three to fall, 3-1,
to LIU Post in an East Coast Conference game from Brookville, New
York. The scores of the sets were 25-17, 12-25, 17-25 and
21-25. The Knights are now 2-3 in conference play this
season.
The first set opened with the Pioneers taking a 3-1 lead by
rattling off three of the first four points of play. From
there, the Knights answered with three straight points to grab a
4-3 lead behind the play of Bianca Steele (Massapequa, N.Y./Holy
Trinity), who recorded a block assist and rattled off a pair of
points while serving. Post recorded the next point to even
the score at 4-all, but then Queens College took off.
The Knights went on a 6-0 run to take a commanding, 10-4
advantage, as Arielle DiCoco (Bluepoint, N.Y./Bayport-Blueport),
the reigning ECC Co-Rookie of the Week, registered three of her
game-high four aces during the scoring spree.
The Knights were never threatened in the first set and they
pushed their lead to a game-best 11 points behind a serve by DiCoco
that was misplayed Makame Namahoe. Eventually, Queens
finished the set with a kill by DiCoco and the 25-17 triumph gave
the Knights a one-set-to-none lead.
Set two opened similarly to set one as the Pioneers took the
early lead, 5-1. Queens would score the next three points
behind a kill from Else Buchmiller (Sacramento, Calif. /Christian
Brothers) and two errors from the Pioneers. From there, Post
pushed an insurmountable lead in the second set as the set ended on
a block assist from Lisa Delfs and Heather Adams.
The third set was also similar to the first two; with Post
taking a 3-1 lead. Queens tied the score on consecutive
points and the teams shared the lead ten more times in the set as
the game was all level at 16-16 when Post closed out the set with a
9-1 run.
The final game in the match saw the teams trade the first eight
points to make the score 4-4. Post built up a six point lead
when a Lisa Delfs kill made the score 11-5. From there,
Queens fought back and used a 9-4 run to get got within one point,
15-14. Suzanne Byrne (Richmond, British Columbia/St.
Patrick's) was responsible for three of the points in the
outburst with a pair of kills and an ace. Post responded by
scoring five of the next six points to lead 20-15. Queens got
within two, 21-19, but then the Pioneers put the game away with a
4-2 run of their own.
DiCoco had 13 kills and a match-high four aces while Xhesi Domi
(Selden, N.Y./Newfield) led the Knights with 16 digs. The
team returns to action on Tuesday, October 9, when they host NYIT
in an East Coast Conference game from Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
The match is slated to begin at 7:00 PM.
