Volleyball Downed in Three by Dowling

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College volleyball team was not able to get untracked Tuesday night at Fitzgerald Gymnasium, as the Knights dropped their third East Coast Conference match in as many tries, falling to conference-leading Dowling College by a 3-0 score (25-17, 25-16, 25-15).

Queens (2-6, 0-3) received an eight-kill, five-block (one solo) effort from senior Jovana Pavlovic (Belgrade, Serbia), while junior Suzanne Byrne (Richmond, B.C.) put down seven kills and assisted on three blocks. Freshman Rita Romeo (Glen Oaks, N.Y.) and sophomore Ceren Kilic (Istanbul, Turkey) led the Knights with six digs apiece on defense.

The Golden Lions (9-3, 3-0) got an 11-kill, three-block (all assisted) output from Bethany Shepard, and outhit QC by a .291-.044 count as a team.

After a Byrne kill pulled the hosts to within a 9-7 deficit in the first set, Dowling embarked on a 9-2 run to take full advantage en route to an eight-point victory.

In set two, Queens held its only leads of the night at 3-2 and 4-3 (off a Pavlovic kill). The teams essentially traded points until their final tie at 9-all, when the Golden Lions tacked on four straight points to take the lead for good.

Set three was all Dowling, as graduate student, Maja Potpara (26 assists, three aces) served seven straight points from the outset to put her squad in charge.

Head coach Leanna Taylor's Queens side is back in action Thursday (Sept. 29), when they travel to New Haven, Conn., for a 7 p.m. first serve at Southern Connecticut State University.
