FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's tennis team was busy this weekend, as it played host to Adelphi University and Dowling College in non-conference matches on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The Knights won each of their first two dual matches of the 2011-12 campaign, taking out the Panthers by a 9-0 decision before upending the Golden Lions by an 8-1 count.

Saturday: Queens 9, Adelphi 0

The Knights lost just four games in the three doubles flights, including a clean 8-love sweep at the No.3 spot by seniors Diego Medrano (Cucuta, Colombia) and Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) over AU's Ryan Villarruel and Ryan White. Senior Attila Toth (Budapest, Hungary) and junior Nikolaj Wulff (Munich, Germany) outlasted Andreas Hammar and Chiwete Njokanma at the No. 1 flight, 8-3, while seniors Tyrone Ewels (Pietermaritzburg, S. Africa) and Claudio Andrade (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) scored an 8-1 decision at No. 2 over Alex Morris and Bryan Kallenberg.

Medrano topped Villarruel by identical 6-love scores at No. 6 singles, leading the way for QC. Toth bested Hammar at No. 1, 6-4 and 6-3, while Wulff used a pair of tiebreakers to take down Morris at No. 2 (7-4 and 7-5 in the respective tiebreakers). Ewels had matching 6-2 scores in the No. 3 flight over Njokanma, while sophomore Andre Pellegrino (Sao Paolo, Brazil) registered mirroring 6-3 scores in toppling Kallenberg in the No. 4 position. Finally, Andrade took down Adrish Tewarie in the No. 5 position by scores of 6-love and 6-3.

Sunday: Queens 8, Dowling 1

Queens (2-0) had to gut out some strong victories in doubles play to take a 3-0 advantage. Brazilian natives, Andrade and Pellegrino topped Francisco Castillo and Michael Sinclair by an 8-love score at No. 2 doubles, while Toth and Wulff continued their hot play by securing an 8-5 edge versus Viktor Kim and Franesc Campius of the Golden Lions (0-1). Medrano and Smith pushed hard at the end of their match in the No. 3 flight against Eduardo Ribeiro and Sardorja Mamadjanov, eventually winning by a score of 9-7.

Wulff led the way in the No. 2 singles flight by taking down Castillo, 6-2 and 6-1, before Andrade stopped Ribeiro by a 6-1, 6-love count at No. 4. Medrano (6-1, 6-1 over Mamadjanov) and Smith (6-1, 6-2 over Sinclair) rounded out the No. 5 and 6 flights, respectively, while Pellegrino fought back from a 6-1 loss in the first set of his No. 3 match against Campius to take the next two sets, 6-2 and 10-5 in the tiebreaker.

Head coach Craig Schwartz's Queens side will wrap up fall-season action Oct. 13-16, when Toth and Wulff compete at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala. The pair won last weekend's USTA/ITA East Regional doubles championship to secure automatic qualification to the national tournament.
