WASHINGTON – The Queens College women's tennis team used strong play both in doubles, and at the bottom of the singles lineup Saturday afternoon to push past host District of Columbia, 7-2, in the East Coast Conference opener for both sides.
The visiting Knights (2-0, 1-0 ECC) swept all three doubles points, as well as the No's. 4-through-6 singles flights to seal the victory. In doubles action, senior Linda Tatala-Colin (Laxou, France) and junior Erika Goldsmith (Edison, N.J.) won their No. 1 flight match against UDC's (0-1, 0-1 ECC) Jessica Nunez and Maria Vitkina by an 8-4 score, while sophomore Anna Rodionova (Orenburg, Russia) and freshman Francesca Fanchin (New York, N.Y.) took down Kristyna Nepivodova and Maxime Duijst by an 8-3 count. Senior Andrea Salvetova (Plzen, Czech Republic) and senior Taylor Barber (Salt Lake City, Utah) teamed up at No. 3 doubles to complete the sweep with an 8-1 decision versus the Firebirds' Sofia Leon and Tadai Abilla.
In singles action, Goldsmith outlasted Nepivodova by a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) score at the No. 2 flight, while Fanchin, freshman Phoebe Chiem (Duluth, Ga.) and junior Daniela Celi (Casselberry, Fla.) won at the No. 4-through-6 spots, respectively. Fanchin took down Duijst, 6-3 and 6-1, while Chiem remained undefeated with a 6-2, 6-love triumph versus Leon. Celi made her season debut a memorable one, as she bested Abilla, 6-3 and 6-love.
Head coach Alan Nagel's Queens squad is back in ECC action Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 13), when it travels to Brookville, N.Y., for a 3:30 p.m. first serve at C.W. Post.
