WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Andre Pellegrino and junior Diego Medrano won singles matches Tuesday afternoon, and the Queens College men's tennis team (20-5), ranked No. 25 in the May 3 Campbell's/ITA Division II Poll and seeded No. 2 in the NCAA East Region, won all three doubles matches en route to a 5-0 victory over third-seeded host Bentley (14-8) in NCAA Division II Championship second-round action.
The Knights now advance to the Round of 16 next Wednesday (May 11), when they face off against second-ranked Valdosta State at 8 a.m., in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
QC ripped through the No. 1 and 3 doubles flights, as Atilla Toth and Nikolaj Wulff (ranked No. 3 in the ITA/Campbell's East Region doubles tally) pushed past Lucas Wever and Rodrigo Ribeiro (8-2), and Diego Medrano and David Burstien routed Victor Suski and Andrew Waddington (8-1), respectively. Regionally ranked No. 8 in doubles play, the Queens tandem of Fabio Minami and Pellegrino needed a tiebreaker at the No. 2 flight to topple Alec Spycher and Zach Tuckman, 9-8 (4).
Pellegrino captured the No. 6 singles match over Waddington by identical 6-1 scores, while Medrano (regionally ranked No. 6) scored a 6-love, 6-2 decision at the No. 3 flight versus Ribeiro.
