FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's tennis team, ranked No. 28 nationally by the Campbell's/ITA Division II poll and No. 1 in the East Region in the latest NCAA regional rankings, utilized a 3-for-3 performance in three-set singles matches to outlast No. 22 Concordia College (ranked No. 2 in the NCAA East Region tally), 5-4 on Friday afternoon.
Queens (18-0) trailed in the team match by a 2-1 count after doubles play, with the tandem of Maria Mendes and Taylor Barber combining to defeat Clara Catanzaro and Ana Mendes of the Clippers (15-2) by an 8-1 count at the No. 3 flight for the Knights' lone point.
In singles action, QC clinched the match by wrapping up four of the six flights – including a trio that lasted three sets. Erika Goldsmith won 6-2, 7-5 at the No.3 flight versus Juliana Frey, before Linda Tatala-Colin, Maria Mendes and Andrea Salvetova persevered and emerged victorious in three-set marathons at the No. 2, 5 and 6 flights, respectively. Tatala-Colin took out Yuliya Plevako by a 6-love, love-6, 6-3 decision, while Maria Mendes secured a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win over Maria Ortiz. Salvetova rallied after losing the first set to Adeline Brennan by a 7-5 count, to win the last two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
Head coach Alan Nagel's Knights are scheduled (weather permitting) to have one more tune up before the May 1-3 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships get underway, as Queens is slated to travel to Newark, N.J., for a 1 p.m. match Saturday afternoon at Division I foe, NJIT.
