WINTER PARK, Fla. – The 37th-ranked Queens College men's tennis team took a 2-1 lead after doubles play Thursday afternoon at the Bert W. Martin Tennis Complex, and came back from a 4-2 deficit to knot the match at 4-all heading into the final match of the day. However, host No. 6 Rollins (11-5) garnered a three-set marathon at No. 2 singles to capture a 5-4 victory over the visiting Knights (6-4).
Playing its third match in as many days in the Sunshine State, QC picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead. Lead doubles team Attila Toth and Nikolaj Wulff topped Rollins' Jeff Morris and Arturo Baraville, 9-8 – including a 10-4 score in the tiebreaker. Meanwhile, Diego Medrano and David Burstein toppled Sebastian Hafner and David Yawalker at the No. 3 flight, 8-5, to push the Knights' edge to 2-1.
The Tars took the No. 3, 5 and 6 singles flights to push out to a 4-2 lead. However, No. 51 Toth (No. 1 singles) and Medrano (No. 4 singles) picked up victories in their respective flights to tie the team scoring at four matches apiece. Toth picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (10-4) decision over sixth-ranked Jeff Morris, while Medrano beat Yawalker, 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4.
The team match came down to a three-set battle between 46th-ranked Baraville and Wulff. After Wulff took the first set by a 7-5 count, Baraville scored identical 6-love scores to give Rollins the match.
Head coach Craig Schwartz's Queens side wraps up its five-match in as many days schedule Friday and Saturday, at No. 43 Florida Tech and No. 41 Palm Beach Atlantic, respectively.
