Matt Collier

Matt Collier, a Queens native, enters his ninth season as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Queens College in 2025–26.

Hired in June 2016 as the 14th head coach in program history, Collier has guided the Knights to five East Coast Conference (ECC) postseason appearances over his eight seasons. Under his leadership, Queens achieved its best recent finish by advancing to the ECC semifinals in 2024–25, marking the first time the Knights reached that stage since 2010–11.

The 2024–25 season also saw Queens finish third in the ECC—the program’s highest conference standing since 2010–11—while matching its best overall win total since the 2016–17 season with 13 victories.

During Collier’s tenure, his coaching staff has developed two 1,000-point scorers, one First Team All-Conference honoree, three Second Team selections, seven Third Team selections, the 2022–23 ECC Defensive Player of the Year Tyler Carey, and three All-METS recipients.

Before joining Queens, Collier accumulated extensive Division I coaching experience, including six seasons on the staff at Drexel University in Philadelphia. While at Drexel, he contributed to a program-record 29-win season in 2011–12 and a victory over then-#17 Louisville in 2010. The Dragons advanced to the quarterfinals of the Postseason NIT, while head coach Bruiser Flint earned CAA Coach of the Year honors. Off the court, Collier worked closely with academic services to support student-athlete success, contributing to Drexel’s 100% graduation rate over 15 years, and launched the inaugural #DragonsInAction 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament to promote bystander intervention against domestic violence. Collier also spearheaded recruitment for the Class of 2013, the highest-rated class in the CAA, and helped raise approximately $3.2 million for program improvements, including two foreign trips and facility renovations.

Collier previously served as an assistant coach at Howard University from 2005–10, overseeing recruiting, academic progress, and scouting. During his tenure, the Bison achieved their first victory over a Pac-12 program with a 47–45 win over Oregon State in November 2008. He began his collegiate coaching career at Drexel as Coordinator of Operations from 2002–05, helping the Dragons reach three National Invitation Tournament appearances, and also served as an assistant coach at Globe Institute of Technology in New York.

A graduate of the University of Massachusetts (2001) with a degree in Sport Management, Collier worked as head manager under coach Bruiser Flint while at UMass. He is an alumnus of the Bronx High School of Science. Matt and his wife, Erica, are the proud parents of daughters Chloe and Cyan.
