DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Opening East Coast Conference (ECC) play, the Queens College women's volleyball team traveled to the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center Wednesday evening to take on defending ECC champion Mercy University Mavericks.
The rookie duo of
Zoe Sercu and
Lucia Bennett led the Knights offensively, combining for eight kills, while Queens totaled six blocks as a team. Queens battled throughout the match but fell to the Mavericks in straight sets.

Mercy opened the first set with a 5-2 advantage before rookie
Mikayla Haskell recorded a kill and followed with a service ace to bring the Knights within one, 5-4. The Mavericks responded with a 10-1 run to build a 15-5 lead. Mercy maintained control for the remainder of the set, taking the opening frame and a 1-0 match lead.
Queens came out strong in the second set, capitalizing on two Mercy attack errors, while Bennett recorded a kill and junior
Olivia Hyman followed with a service ace to give the Knights an early 4-1 lead. The Mavericks answered with a 10-1 run of their own to take an 11-5 advantage. Queens trimmed the deficit to four, 11-7, behind back-to-back kills from Sercu and Hyman. Mercy, however, regained momentum and closed out the set to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Mavericks carried their momentum into the third set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead. With Mercy's offense continuing to control the tempo, the Knights were unable to mount a comeback as the Mavericks completed the three-set sweep.

Queens returns to Fitzgerald Gymnasium on Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Knights welcome Roberts Wesleyan University for an ECC matchup. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
