FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to Division II action, the Queens College men's tennis team welcomed the University of Findlay Oilers to the QC Indoor Tennis Bubble on Monday afternoon.
The Knights set the tone early by securing the doubles point at No. 1 and No. 3 before sweeping all six singles matches to complete a dominant 7-0 victory.
With the win, Queens improves to 5-0 overall on the young season.
DOUBLES PLAY
Queens opened the afternoon at No. 3 doubles as juniors
Tim Andersson (Linkoping, Sweden) and junior
David Cerne (Ljubljana, Slovenia) earned a 6-3 victory over Nicolo Lippolis and Runa Kagoshima.
The Knights clinched the doubles point at the top spot, where senior
Alexis Martin-Gibiard (Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France) and sophomore
Adam Laur (Boulogne Billancourt, France) delivered a convincing 6-2 win against Clement Andrieu and Grant Hawkins.
Findlay avoided the sweep at No. 2 doubles, as senior
Lucas Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) and sophomore
Samuel Linck (Haarlem, Netherlands) fell 6-4 to Matthis Veniard and Soh Kuyama.
SINGLES PLAY
Linck started the singles surge at No. 5, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kagoshima.
Martin-Gibiard followed at No. 4, posting a 6-1, 6-3 decision against Aleksander Ivancevic to give Queens a 3-0 advantage.
At No. 2, Laur captured the opening set 6-2 over Kuyama before battling through a tightly contested second set. Laur sealed the team victory with a 7-5 second-set triumph.
Foix Sotos delivered a strong performance at No. 1 singles, edging Andrieu in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3) before pulling away for a 6-2 second-set win to secure the Knights' fifth point.
Junior
Caleb Brightman (Pawling, N.Y.) added to the tally at No. 6 with a steady 6-4, 6-4 victory over Maneo Gaborin.
At No. 3, Andersson was pushed to three sets by Veniard. After taking the first set 6-2, Andersson dropped the second 6-4 before regrouping to claim the deciding set 6-3 and complete the 7-0 sweep.
