Strong Singles Play Lifts Women’s Tennis in Season-Opening Test

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Opening their spring season Wednesday afternoon, the Queens College women's tennis team squared off against Division I opponent Stony Brook University Seawolves in a competitive cross-divisional matchup.

Despite being swept in doubles play, the Knights mounted a strong push in singles competition before narrowly falling, 4-3.

Doubles Play

Queens battled throughout doubles action but came up short with the Seawolves winning at No. 1 and No. 3 court.

The No. 1 pairing of senior Marie Bertran (Villelaure, France) and freshman Ela Vasic (Novi Sad, Serbia) fell 6-0 against Elena Lobo-Corral and Kristi Boro.

At No. 2 doubles, juniors Lilie Bizouerne (La Ciotat, France) and Sixtine Goubet (Lyon, France) defeated Mia Palladino and Sanjana Devineni to the score of 6-2.

The No. 3 duo of senior Lydia Zafeiri (Athens, Greece) and sophomore Johanne Genestay (Dinan, France) delivered the closest contest, but the Stony Brook duo of Mila Charles and Laura Ozola secured the sweep with a 6-4 decision.

Singles Play

The Knights responded with an impressive showing in singles competition. Vasic put Queens on the board at No. 4 singles, earning a decisive 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Genestay followed with a resilient comeback win at No. 5, rallying after a tight first set to claim the match via a 10-4 third-set tiebreak.

Senior Kayla Taszymowicz (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added another point at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph.

Queens nearly completed the comeback at No. 3 singles, where Goubet delivered one of the afternoon's most dramatic matches against Ozola. After dropping a heartbreaking opening-set tiebreak, she responded emphatically with a 6-1 second-set victory. The deciding third set proved equally tense, but Stony Brook edged out a narrow 10-8 win to clinch the match and the overall team result.

Bertran (No. 1) and Bizouerne (No. 2) also competed fiercely but were unable to secure points for the Knights.
