FLUSHING, N.Y. – Continuing NCAA East regional play, the Queens College women's tennis team welcomed nationally-ranked #36 Adelphi University Panthers to the QC Indoor Tennis Bubble Tuesday afternoon.
In the latest ITA National rankings released last Wednesday, the Knights moved up to #24 while the Panthers ranked in at #36 in the country.
Matching up against another nationally-ranked opponent the Knights would win two of three doubles courts to take a 1-0 lead into singles play before Queens won five of the six singles matches to earn a 6-1 victory over the Panthers.
With the victory, Queens improved to 8-3 overall on the year with four matches remaining before the NCAA Tournament.
DOUBLES ACTION
The Knights would win at courts #1 and #2 beginning with the #1 duo of seniors
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and
Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) defeating Katarina Liedbeck and Zuzanna Witkowska to the score of 6-3.
The #2 pair of graduate student
Eva Rivoal (Saint-Denis-de-Pile, France) and junior
Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) would knock off Roisin Boyd and Caterina Federici to the score of 6-1 to clinch the doubles points and take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
It would be a tough loss at #3 doubles for Queens pair of graduate student
Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and rookie
Sakura Saito (Chiba, Japan) as they fell in a tough 6-4 loss against Genesis Beltran and Sara Lindeman.
SINGLES ACTION
Three singles victories away from clinching the victory, Makal earned a three-set comeback victory over Liedbeck to the score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 at #1 court.
It would be a tough loss for Rivoal at #2 singles as the senior fell at #2 court against Witowska to the score of 6-3, 5-7, 0-1
(8-10).
Senior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) would knock off Royd at the #3 court to the score of 6-4, 6-1, while Lamy earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lindeman at the #4 court.
Junior
Regina Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico) promoted to #5 court knocked off Federici to the score of 6-3, 6-0 before Berggren earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Beltran to the score of 6-4, 6-3 at #6 court as Queens earned a 6-1 victory Tuesday afternoon.
NEXT MATCH
The Knights will now prepare for another regional showdown on Sunday, Apr. 12 as they travel to West Haven, Conn against the Chargers of the University of New Haven. The first serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
