#21 Women’s Tennis Defeats Jefferson for Ninth Victory of the Year

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Continuing NCAA East regional play, the nationally-ranked #21 Queens College women's tennis team made the trip to Philadelphia, PA for a Friday afternoon contest against Thomas Jefferson University Rams at Legacy Youth Tennis Center.
 
In the latest ITA National rankings released last Wednesday, the Knights moved up to #21, the highest in the East Region entering April 16.  
 
The Knights would earn the doubles points at courts #2 and #3 before taking five of the six singles to earn a 6-1 victory over the Rams.
 
With the victory, Queens improved to 9-3 overall on the year with three matches remaining before the NCAA Tournament.

DOUBLES ACTION

The Knights opened doubles play as the #2 pair of graduate student Eva Rivoal (Saint-Denis-de-Pile, France) and junior Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) defeated Anna Morgillo and Zenia Barretto to the score of 6-4.
 
Queens would clinch the doubles point at #3 court as the pair of graduate student Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and rookie Sakura Saito (Chiba, Japan) defeated Emily Frost and Rose Huang to the score of 6-4.
 
It would be a tough loss at the #1 court as the senior duo of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) fell 5-7 against Nicole Nrbkova and Alycia Veroux.

SINGLES ACTION

Leading 1-0, the Knights would take five of the six singles matches as senior Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Morgillo at #3 court.
 
Junior Regina Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico) defeated Barretto at #5 court to the score of 6-0, 6-2 before Berggren at #6 court earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Frost.
 
Lamy at #4 court earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Huang as the Knights earned their fifth victory of the day.
 
It would be a battle at the first two courts as Makal at #1 court earned a three-set comeback victory over Veroux to the score of 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (14-12) while it would be tough at #2 court for Rivoal as the senior fell to Hrbkova to the score of 5-7, 6-2, 0-1 (7-10).

NEXT MATCH

The Knights head to Stony Brook, N.Y. on Saturday, Apr. 19 for a cross-divisional matchup against DI foe Stony Brook University Seawolves. The first serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
