FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning home in a key East Regional matchup, the Queens College women's tennis welcomed the Wildcats of Wilmington University to the QC Indoor Door Tennis Wednesday afternoon.
In the latest ITA National rankings released Wednesday, the Knights stayed at #34 while the Wildcats ranked at #11 in the country.
In their second matchup against a Top 15 team in the country, the Knights would earn a convincing sweep over the Wildcats as they earned the doubles points at courts #1-#2 before taking all six singles to earn a 7-0 victory.
With the victory, Queens improved to 7-3 overall on the year with four matches remaining before the NCAA Tournament.
DOUBLES ACTION
The Knights quickly clinched the doubles points as the #1 duo of seniors
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and
Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) defeated Lyza Sylka and Siana MacDonald to the score of 6-1.
Queens would clinch the doubles points behind the #2 pair of graduate student
Eva Rivoal (Saint-Denis-de-Pile, France) and junior
Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) sweeping Ines Oliveira and Gloria Barcaro to the score of 6-0.
With the doubles points clinched, the Wildcats earned their sole victory of the day at #3 doubles as Queens pair of graduate student
Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and rookie
Sakura Saito (Chiba, Japan) fell short against Ming-Fu Chen and Molloy Carlberg to the score of 2-6.
SINGLES ACTION
Three singles victory away from clinching the victory, senior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) would defeat Sylka to the score of 6-1, 6-0 at #3 singles before Lamy knocked off Oliveira to the score of 6-1, 6-0 at #4 court to put Queens in a commanding lead of 3-0.
Junior
Regina Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico) clinched the victory at #6 court with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kushi Khandoji.
Having clinched the match, the Knights would go on to complete the sweep at the remaining three courts.
Makal at #1 court earned a tough 6-2, 7-6
(7-3) victory over MacDonald before Rivoal earned a 6-4, 7-6
(7-5) victory over Carlberg at #2 court.
Berggren would complete the sweep at #5 singles in a three-set battle over Chen. Berggren earned a 6-1 victory before Chen forced the deciding third set with a 7-6
(7-4) victory. However, with the match decided already both players would decide their singles battle in a 10-point battle which saw the senior Berggren earn a 10-8 victory as Queens completed a 7-0 victory and knocked off the #11 team in the country.
NEXT MATCH
The Knights will now prepare for another regional showdown on Tuesday, Apr. 8 as they welcome the Panthers of Adelphi University to town. The first serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
