Men’s Tennis Defeats Assumption 6-1 to Conclude Fall Dual Play

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to campus to conclude their final fall match of the season, the Queens College men's tennis team welcomed the Assumption University Greyhounds to Flushing for a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon.
 
The Knights earned a hard-fought doubles point, with all three matches going the distance, before dominating singles play by taking five of six matches to secure a 6-1 victory over the Greyhounds.
 
With the win, Queens improves to 3-0 overall heading into the spring semester.

DOUBLES PLAY

The Knights fell behind early in doubles as the #1 duo as senior Alexis Martin-Gibiard (Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France) and sophomore Adam Laur (Boulogne Billancourt, France) dropped a 5-7 decision to Igor Kubalka and Michele Elia.
 
Queens tied things up as the #3 pairing of junior Tim Andersson (Linkoping, Sweden) and junior David Cerne (Ljubljana, Slovenia) earned a thrilling 7-6 (7-4) victory over Jakob Bordt and Luigi Bassani.
 
The Knights secured the doubles point and a 1-0 lead going into singles play after the #2 duo of senior Lucas Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) and sophomore Samuel Linck (Haarlem, Netherlands) edged out a 7-6 (7-4) win over Alec Pijnacker and Herman Aguirre.

SINGLES PLAY

The Knights quickly doubled their lead as Andersson cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Pijnacker on the #3 court.
 
Martin-Gibiard followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Kubalka at #4 singles to bring Queens within one match of clinching.
 
Laur secured the overall victory for Queens at the #2 court, defeating Elia in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Assumption picked up its only point of the day at the top singles spot, where Foix Sotos fell in a hard-fought three-set battle to Aguirre, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 0-1 (1-10).
 
Queens added two more wins to cap off the match. Junior Caleb Brightman (Pawling, N.Y.) defeated Bordt 6-2, 6-4 on court #6, while sophomore Pablo Serrano (Cochabamba, Bolivia) took down Bassani 6-4, 6-4 on court #5, sealing the 6-1 final.

NEXT UP:

The Knights will officially conclude their fall semester schedule by competing in a two-day invitational at Fordham University in the Bronx, taking place from Friday, October 10 to Saturday, October 11.
