Rookie Hathaway Records Single Match Program-Record 13 Service Aces as Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Holy Family Wednesday Evening

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Continuing non-conference play the Queens College women's volleyball team welcomed the Tigers of Holy Family to Fitzgerald Gymnasium Wednesday evening.
 
Led by a record-breaking performance from freshman Madi Hathaway (Edmond, OK) who notched her sixth double-double of the year with a program-record 13 service aces, 10 assists, and seven kills, while junior Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) tallied seven kills as the Knights earned their second three-set victory of the year in the sweep over the Tigers.
 
With the win, the Knights improved to 8-5 on the year and ended a three-match losing streak. The win also earned Queens their second straight victory over the Tigers.

MATCH RECAP vs. Holy Family University (W, 3-0 | Set Scores: 25-12, 25-18, 25-22)

The first set saw three ties and two lead changes with the visitors taking an early lead of 4-1 before Conrad recorded two kills in a 3-0 run to help Queens tie the set at 4-4. But the Tigers answered with a 4-0 run of their own to take an 8-4 lead.
 
However, a kill from rookie Jonaida Donowa (Porter, TX) would start a 14-0 run led by rookie Hathaway recording six service aces as Queens took a commanding lead of 18-8. The Tigers would trade the next five points before Senior Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) recorded three service aces of her own to put the Knights at set point before Hathaway recorded a kill to clinch the first set to the score of 25-12 and take a 1-0 match lead.
 
The second set would see five ties but the Knights would never trail as Queens opened the set on an 11-4 run with Hathaway recording more four service aces.
 
But the Tigers would use an 8-1 run to tie the set at 12-12 before both teams traded the next six points to retie the set at 15-15.
 
With the set tied at 15-15 a kill from Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) would help Queens end the set on a 10-3 run as the Knights earned the second set victory to the score of 25-18 and took a commanding lead of 2-0 in the match.
 
The third set would see six ties and four lead changes as the Knights began the set on a 6-3 lead before Holy Family answered back with a 5-2 run to tie the set at 8-8. Queens led by junior Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, FLA) two kills and two service aces from Boudouris would put the Knights up 12-9 before both sides traded the six points.
 
With the Knights leading 15-12, the Tigers would take advantage of the Knights' error as the visitors took a 19-16 lead.
 
Trailing 19-16, the Knights answered back on a 3-2 run but with the Tigers leading 21-19 the combination of a kill from Hathaway and back-to-back blocks from Conrad and Osterhoudt saw Queens take a 22-21 lead forcing a Tigers timeout.
 
The timeout would not slow down the Knights as Queens ended the set on a 3-1 run led by a kill from Hathaway and Conrad as Queens earned the third set to the final score of 25-22 and completed their first sweep over Holy Family in program history.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Rookie Hathaway paced the Knights' offense recording her sixth double-double of the year with a match-high and program record of 13 service aces and 10 assists to go with seven kills on hitting % of .267 and four digs.
    • The 13 service aces are the second most recorded in a three-set match in Division II this season.
  • Conrad recorded seven kills, five digs, and three blocks.
  • Donowa recorded five kills, three blocks, and two digs.
  • Boudouris recorded 12 digs, and a career-best five service aces.

NEXT MATCH

The Knights conclude the homestand on Friday, Sept. 27 as they welcome the Lions of Georgian Court University to town for non-conference action. The first serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
