All-Round Team Performance Propels Women’s Volleyball to Sweep over Georgian Court Friday Evening

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Concluding September's non-conference play before opening East Coast Conference play on Sunday afternoon the Queens College women's volleyball team welcomed the Lions of Georgian Court University to Fitzgerald Gymnasium Friday evening.
 
The junior duo of Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) and Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, FLA) combined for 18 kills and eight blocks to lead the Knights to a three-set sweep over the Lions.
 
With the win, the Knights improved to 9-5 on the year and earned their second straight victory. The win also earned Queens their first victory over the Lions since the 2017 season as the Knights ended a four-match losing streak and completed their first sweep over their non-conference foe since the 2013 season.

MATCH RECAP vs. Georgian Court University (W, 3-0 | Set Scores: 25-14, 25-22, 25-19)

Queens jumped out an early lead of 6-1 as the Knights recorded three kills, and two blocks to go with a service ace from junior Sarah Munn (Torrance, CA) to open the first set.
 
The Lions would attempt to answer back to keep the scoreline within three points, 13-10 before a double block from Osterhoudt and senior Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) saw Queens take a 15-10 lead and forcing a Lions timeout.
 
Queens unfazed by the timeout would run away the first set as they closed the set on a 10-4 run led by five kills from Conrad. The junior recorded a set-high six kills on a blistering .600 hitting % before Conrad sealed the set with an ace as Queens took an early match lead of 1-0 with a 25-14 first set victory.
 
The second set would see six ties and four lead changes as the Lions began with a 6-3 lead before Queens answered back led by an ace from Conrad and kills from rookie Jonaida Donowa (Porter, TX), and senior Alicia Cervera (Valencia, Spain) to tie the set at 7-7.
 
Both teams would trade the next seven points as the Lions led 11-10 before the Knights went on a 4-1 run to take a 15-12 lead forcing a visitors timeout.
 
As the Lions worked their way back to get within one, 17-16, Cervera started a 5-2 run for Queens as the home side extended their set lead to 22-18.
 
Georgian Court would get close as two points, 24-22 to force a Queens timeout, but Queens would regroup quickly as Conrad sealed the second set with her eighth kill of the match as the Knights took a commanding match lead of 2-0 with a second set victory of 25-22.
 
Osterhoudt started the third set with a kill before Franco at the service line put Queens up 5-0 recording two service aces.
 
The Knights would lead as high as 13-6 in the third set before a 7-2 Lions run saw them get within two, 15-13 before the junior trio of Osterhoudt, Conrad, and Munn combined for four of the five points in the 5-0 run as Queens took a commanding lead of 20-13.
 
As the Lions attempted to get back into the set, the early deficit would prove too much for the visitors before Queens closed out the set and match with a 25-19 third set victory and completed the three-set sweep for their ninth victory of the year.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Junior Conrad led the way with a match-high 11 kills on a hitting % of .476 to go with two service aces and a career-best five blocks.
  • Osterhoudt recorded seven kills on a scorching match-high hitting % of .556 to go with three blocks.
  • Rookie Donowa notched four kills, two kills, and two digs.
  • Senior Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece recorded a match-high 13 assists, to go with eight digs.
  • Rookie Madi Hathaway (Edmond, OK) notched 12 assists, seven digs and three kills.
  • Junior Munn recorded a match-high 13 digs, and five assists and tied a career-high four service aces in the victory.

NEXT MATCH

The Knights open East Coast Conference play with a weekend trip to Rochester, N.Y. on Sunday, Sept. 29 as they match up against the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University. The first serve is set for noon.
