OCEANSIDE, N.Y. – Opening East Coast Conference play to begin their fall slate the Queens College women's tennis team matched up against the Lions of Molloy University at Point Set Indoor and Pickleball Cub Saturday afternoon.
The Knights opened their ECC schedule with a 7-0 sweep over the Lions and earned their first win of the year.
DOUBLES ACTION
Newcomers junior
Regina Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico) and
Lydia Zafeiri (Athens, Greece) opened the doubles competition taking a 6-0 victory over Ashley Bonilla and Julia Salazar at #2 doubles.
Queens would clinch the doubles point at #1 doubles as the senior pair of
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) and
Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) earned a 6-1 victory over Erin Sanchez and Elena Saunders.
The senior duo of
Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) and
Mariana Ling (Orlando, FL) earned a 6-2 victory over Isabella Fortaleza and Alice Fartushynska as Queens completed the sweep.
SINGLES ACTION
Leading 1-0, Bergmann would put the Knights up 2-0 as she earned a 6-1 first set victory before Fortaleza retired hurt at #2 singles.
Sophomore
Kayla Taszymowicz (Brooklyn, N.Y.) would earn a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Bonilla at #5 singles as Queens took a 3-0 lead.
Leading 3-0, junior
Allycia Santa-Cruz (Queens, N.Y.) earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Taylor Gunnip as Queens clinched their first match of the year.
Zafeiri at #4 singles would knock off Fartushynska to the score of 6-0, 6-2, while Hany-Fawzy earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #1 singles over Saunders as Queens extended their lead to 5-0.
Ruiz would complete the shutout over the Lions at #3 singles as she defeated Sanchez to the score of 6-2, 6-4, as Queens opened ECC play on a winning note.
NEXT MATCH
Queens will use the next two weeks to prepare for back-to-back action beginning on Friday, Oct. 4 as they welcome the Wildcats of Daemen University come to town before the Saints of D'Youville University visit Flushing on Saturday. The first serve against the Wildcats is set for 1:00 p.m.
