FLUSHING, N.Y. – Opening a two-match homestand the Queens College women's tennis team welcomed the Wildcats of Daemen University to the QC Indoor Tennis Bubble for an East Coast Conference match.
It would be a tight finish in the double action before the Knights completed the sweep before the home side took five singles matches to take a 6-1 victory over the Wildcats.
With the win, the Knights improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in ECC play.
DOUBLES ACTION
Playing at home for the first time Queens began the double action taking an early lead of 1-0 as the #2 doubles pair of junior
Regina Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico) and graduate student
Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) earned a 6-3 victory over Kitsa Scime and Yinett Del Leon.
At #1 doubles the senior pair of
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and
Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) trailed the doubles match 3-0, and 4-2 against Frida Rubio and Isabella Bjerkan before the Knights pair battled back to tie the match on two separate occasions. After tying the match at 5-5, the senior duo would clinch the doubles point with back-to-back points to the final score of 7-5 as Queens took a 1-0 lead into singles play.
While at the #3 doubles court, the pair of junior
Lydia Zafeiri (Athens, Greece) and freshman
Sakura Saito (Chiba, Japan) battled back and forth against Stephanie Baier and Carly Armitage. The Knights duo battled back to force a tiebreaker to clinch the victory. Trailing 3-1 in the tiebreaker Saito and Zafeiri would earn four straight points to complete the sweep to the final score of 7-6
(7-3) heading into singles.
SINGLES ACTION
In singles play Ruiz would earn her second straight victory of the day with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Armitage at #4 singles to put the Knights up 2-0.
Junior
Kayla Taszymowicz (Brooklyn, N.Y.) playing at #5 singles would cruise to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bjerkan as Queens took a commanding lead of 3-0.
The Knights would clinch the match at #2 singles as senior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Scime as Queens took their fourth victory of the day.
At #6 singles Zafeiri earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Baier before Bergmann defeated Del Leon 6-2, 6-3 at #3 singles as Queens earned their sixth victory of the day.
At #1 singles, it would be a back-and-forth battle between Makal and Rubio. Rubio would earn the first set victory to the score of 6-4 before Makal earned a 6-4 victory to force the deciding third set. With the match clinched by the Knights, the two would decide the outcome in a 10-point tiebreaker, but it would be Rubio who earned the victory to the score of 10-5 to complete the final match of the day.
NEXT MATCH
The Knights complete the weekend of play on Saturday, Oct. 5 as the Saints of D'Youville University come to town in ECC play. The first serve is set for 5:00 p.m.
