FLUSHING, N.Y. – Over the weekend, the Queens College women's tennis team opened the Fall schedule by competing in the ITA East Regional Singles and Doubles Tournament.
The Knights were led by senior
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and junior
Regina Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico) as they advanced to the Round of 16 in the Singles Tournament.
On the doubles side the duo of Makal and senior
Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) advanced to the Round of 16.
Makal seeded #12 opened the tournament in the Round of 64 earning a two-set victory over New Haven Leni Bischof to the score of 6-0, 6-3. In the next round Makal would knock off #22 Southern New Hampshire University Dajana Abadzic in two sets to the score of 6-2, 6-1.
But the senior's quest for a second ITA Singles Championship would come to an end in the Round of 16 as she was defeated by New Haven #18 Risako Umekuni in a hard-fought three-set loss to the score of 7-5, 4-6, 10-12.
While Ruiz seeded #29 made her Knights debut against Franklin Pierce University Gabriela Almeida and would earn a 6-4, 6-1 victory to advance to the Round of 32. In the next round Ruiz would defeat Assumption College Laurence Bosemans in two sets including a first set tiebreaker of 7-6
(9-7), 6-3 victory. Ruiz would be defeated by #13 Chestnut Hill College Alison Isaac to the score of 6-4 6-4.
The duo of senior
Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and Berggren advanced to the Round of 32.
While on the doubles side, Makal and Berggren advanced to the Round of 32 before they were defeated by the SNHU duo of Justina Haver and Lois Tsui.

Queens the defending East Coast Conference Regular Season Champions will begin the dual matches portion of their schedule starting with a road trip against the Lions of Molloy University in conference play on Saturday, Sept. 21 in Oceanside, N.Y. The first serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
