Women’s Tennis drops First ECC Match of the Year, Falls to UDC 4-3 Saturday

Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Continuing East Coast Conference play the Queens College women's tennis team traveled to Washington, D.C with a match-up against the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia.
 
The doubles points would prove to be the crucial point as Queens went into singles play down 0-1 before both sides split the singles competition as the Knights dropped their first match of the year to the final score of 4-3.
 
With the loss, the Knights move to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in ECC play.

DOUBLES ACTION

The Knights would drop the doubles point as the senior pair of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) fell 6-4 to Desire Parn and Polina Zelentsova before the #2 doubles pair of Eva Rivoal (Saint-Denis-de-Pile, France) and Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) fell to Claudia Bahamon and Celia Bastin to the score of 6-4.
 
The #3 duo of graduate student Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and junior Regina Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico) earned a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4) victory over Lina Benjelloun and Nadja Zmukic but Queens would go into singles play trailing 1-0.

SINGLES ACTION

Makal at #2 singles would fall to Zelentsova to the score of 6-3, 6-2 before Rivoal fell 6-3, 6-2 at #1 singles against Parn as the Firebirds took a 3-0 lead.
 
Senior Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) at #3 singles would fight back earning a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Bahamon as the Knights cut their deficit down to 3-1.
 
Lamy at #6 singles would earn a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Zmukic before Queens tied the match 3-3 as Berggren at #5 singles earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Benjelloun.
 
Down to the final match at #4 singles between Bergmann and Bastin to determine the winner, Bergmann fell 6-3 in the first set before battling back to earn a 6-3 victory and force the tiebreaker. However, Bergmann would drop the third set to the score of 6-0 as Queens dropped their first match of the year.

NEXT MATCH

The Knights conclude the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 19 as they welcome two-time defending ECC Champions Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College to town. The first serve is set for 5:00 p.m.
