WBB Davis Records Career-High 31 Points Against Mercy in ECC Play

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Opening a three-game homestand, the Queens College women's basketball team matched up against the Mavericks of Mercy University inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium in East Coast Conference play Wednesday evening.
 
Sophomore Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded her second double-double of the year with a career-high 31 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Amiyah Edney-Holmes (Philadelphia, PA) tallied 13 points and freshman Jalea Abrams (Elmira, N.Y.) notched 11 points as the Knights fell in a heartbreaking 69-60 overtime loss to the Mavericks.

Game Recap

The Knights opened the game on an 8-3 run before the Mavericks cut the advantage down to 8-7 with 4:24 to go in the first quarter. Led by Davis and Edney-Holmes, the Knights would end the final 3:29 of the first stanza on a 10-4 run as Queens took an 18-11 heading into the second quarter with the Bronx native leading the way with seven straight points to end the stanza.
 
The second quarter would be a back-and-forth affair as the Mavericks attempted to cut into the home side lead. but Davis would continue to have an answer for each Mercy run as Queens took a 32-26 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
Mercy opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run as the Knights lead was cut down to one, 34-33 with 8:12 to go.
 
But Queens would respond with an 11-0 run from the 7:51 mark to the 2:58 mark as the Knights took a 45-33 lead as they kept the Mavericks scoreless over six minutes.
 
The visitors would get their first field goal in over seven minutes at the 1:37 mark as a three-pointer cut the advantage down to nine, 45-36 before the Knights ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 13-point lead of 49-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Both teams traded a deep shot to open the fourth quarter as the Knights maintained their 13-point lead of 52-39 with 8:54 to go.
 
But turnovers and missed field goals would hurt the Knights as the Mavericks cut the Knights lead down to one point, 52-51 with 4:59 to go in the game.
 
As the Knights were held scoreless over six and half minutes, a jumper from Abrams would put the Knights back up by three, 54-51 with 2:24 to go.
 
With the Knights in foul trouble, the Mavericks would go 2-of-2 at the line to get within one, 54-53 with 1:42 to go in the game. Davis would put the Knights back up by two, 55-53 as she went 1-of-2 at the line with 1:17 left in regulation.
 
But the visitors would tie the game at 55-55 at the 1:01 mark before Queens missed a jumper giving the Mavericks the ball with 33 seconds left.
 
As Mercy turned the ball over with 25 seconds left, rookie Abrams would put the Knights back up by two, 57-55 with 10 seconds left in the game. But Mercy would beat the buzzer to tie the game at 57-57 as the visitors forced overtime.
 
It would be the first overtime game against the Mavericks since the 2017-18 season.
 
But a shorthanded and tired Knights squad would run out of gas as they had two players foul out before as the Mavericks outscored Queens 12-3 in overtime to defeat the Knights to the final score of 69-60 Wednesday evening.

By the Numbers

  • Davis led the offense with her second double-double of the year with a career-best 31 points (9-of-11 FG, 4-of-4 3PT, 9-of-11 FT), 10 rebounds, and four steals.
    • For the second time this year, the sophomore recorded a 30-point effort
    • For the sixth time in her career, Davis recorded four made three-pointers and the fourth overall this year.
  • Edney-Holmes recorded 13 points to go with four rebounds and two assists.
  • Abrams notched 11 points (4-of-8, 1-of-3 3PT, 2-of-4 FT) to go with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
  • Sophomore Gianna Henriques (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded four points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one block on the evening.
  • As a team, the Knights shot 40.0% as they went 20-50 from the field, while the Mavericks shot 36.2% on 21-58 from the field.
    • The Knights held a slim rebounding margin of 38-37.
    • Queens forced 18 Mercy turnovers into 21 points.

The Knights continue the homestand on Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon as they welcome the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College to town. Tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
