Women’s Basketball Continues ECC Play at D’Youville Friday Evening

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Opening a two-game road trip in Buffalo, the Queens College women's basketball team fell to the Saints of D'Youville University in East Coast Conference play Friday evening inside the College Center Gym.

Game Recap

The Saints opened the scoring to take a 4-0 lead before a three-pointer from rookie Jalea Abrams (Elmira, N.Y.) at the 8:23 mark got the Knights on the scoreboard. But the home side would tally six straight points to take a 10-5 lead before a layup from freshman Nkiru Awaka (Hyde Park, N.Y.) broke the drought for the visitors at the 6:34 mark.

As D'Youville extended their lead to seven points, 12-5, sophomore Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) and Awaka would record back-to-back buckets to get the Knights within three, 12-9 with 5:18 to go in the first quarter.

But with the Saints shooting over 70.0% from the field in the stanza, the home side would take a 23-10 lead heading into the second quarter.

The offensive struggles would continue in the second quarter as the Knights were unable to solve the D'Youville defensive pressure as they were held to 11 points as Queens went into halftime trailing 46-21.

Awaka and Davis began the third quarter on a 6-4 run to get the Knights within 50-27 before the Saints tallied a 13-0 run to take a 63-27 lead.

But the Knights would end the final 2:55 of the third quarter on an 11-6 run (their best run of the game) with Davis leading the way with six points.

As the Knights held the Saints scoreless for the first 4:23 of the fourth quarter, they would go on a 6-0 run to force a D'Youville timeout.

Queens would outscore the Saints 14-9 in the fourth quarter, but the slow start in the first half would hurt the Knights' comeback attempt as they fell to the final score of 78-52 Friday evening.
