Volleyball Game Day Preview – Knights Hit the Road for Four Contests

FLUSHING, N.Y. -  After a 2-1 start to the 2023 season, the Queens College women's volleyball team hits the road for four non-conference matches. The Knights will matchup against CACC members beginning with the Caldwell University Cougars on Tuesday (Sept. 5) evening before spending the weekend in Wilmington, Delaware as they compete in the 2023 Wildcat Regional Invitational from Friday (Sept. 8) to Saturday (Sept. 9) afternoon.

Queens College Knights Preview (2-1 Overall Record)
  • Head Coach Stefan Leger and the Knights opened the 2023 season with a 2-1 start as Queens swept Charleston 3-0, and earned a comeback 3-1 victory over Post on Friday (Sept. 1) to start 2-0 for the first time since the 2014 season. 
  • It would be a tough loss to Franklin Pierce on Saturday (Sept. 2) afternoon as the Knights fell 3-0 to the Ravens.
  • The Knights were led by sophomore Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) who recorded 36 kills, 26 digs, and four service aces. Conrad would post her first career double-double with a season-high 16 kills and tied a career-high 13 digs against Post.
  • Junior Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) continued with an all-round performance posting 23 kills, 37 digs, and five service aces. Franco notched a season-high nine kills and 16 digs in the 3-1 victory over Post.
  • Junior Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) tallied 90 assists, 20 digs, and eight service aces including her first double-double of the year with a season-high 36 assists and 10 digs against Post.

Caldwell University Cougars Preview (0-1 Overall Record)
  • Caldwell opened the season with a five-set 3-2 loss to Kutztown on August 31.
  • The Knights match up against Caldwell for the third straight season as they take a two-match win streak against the Cougars into Tuesday's contest. 
  • Both wins have come in four sets which included their first victory over the Cougars in program history on September 7, 2021. 
  • The Cougars are paced by Reese Sherwood who recorded a double-double with a team-high 10 kills and 15 assists to go with nine digs and three blocks against Kutztown. 

Holy Family University Tigers Preview (1-1 Overall Record)
  • Holy Family opened the season by splitting a doubleheader against Lincoln University on Saturday (Sept. 2) afternoon and will matchup against Adelphi University on Wednesday (Sept. 6) before matching up against the Knights on Friday.
  • It will be the first meeting against the Tigers since the 2017 season when Queens fell 3-0.
  • Queens are looking to end a three-match losing streak to the Tigers as they look for their first win since the 2007 season. 
  • The Tigers are paced by Shelby Kinzer who recorded 23 kills, six service aces, and 17 digs against Lincoln.
  • While Ava Kidd recorded 19 kills and Jayden Bralts tallied 16 kills in the two matches.

Wilmington University Wildcats Preview (3-1 Overall Record)
  • Wilmington went 3-1 at the 2023 Marauder Clash to the season with their lone loss coming against Indiana (PA.). The Wildcats will match up against Kutztown on Friday before battling the Knights on Saturday.
  • It will be the first meeting against the Wildcats since the 2019 season when Queens welcomed them to Flushing as the visitors earned a 3-0 victory.
  • Queens are looking to end a two-match losing streak against the Wildcats and in search of their first victory over the host since the 2004 season.
  • The Wildcats are paced by Cailyn Smiley who recorded 44 kills, and 47 digs in four matches, while Brice Hansen recorded 26 kills, and 25 digs during the opening weekend. 

Thomas Jefferson University Rams Preview (0-0 Overall Record)
  • Jefferson opens the 2023 season against West Chester on Wednesday (Sept. 6) and will match up against Kutztown and Molloy before facing off against the Knights on Saturday.
  • It will be the first meeting against the Rams since the 2018 season when Queens fell 3-0 at the East Stroudsburg Invitational.
  • Queens are looking to end a two-match losing streak against the Rams and in search of their first victory over their non-conference opponent since the 2008 season when they earned a 3-1 victory.
  • The Wildcats went 24-7 last season earning the CACC Championship with a victory over Bloomfield and a trip to the NCAA DII East Regional Tournament. 

Next Match
The Knights open a four-match homestand on Tuesday (Sept. 12) evening as they welcome the Setters of Pace University to town. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
