FLUSHING, N.Y. – Looking to conclude their three-match week on a positive note, the Queens College volleyball team welcomed the Mavericks of Mercy University to Flushing in East Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.
With the offense of junior
Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.), and the sophomore duo of
Kendall Conrad (Carolltown, PA) and
Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, FL) combining for 41 kills, the Knights earned their third ECC victory of the year to the final score of 3-1
(Set Scores: 25-15, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22) over the Mavericks.
With the win, the Knights improved to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in ECC play.
Match 14 Recap (Set Scores: 25-15, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22)
It was a quick start to the match as Franco recorded two kills in the 4-0 run to start the first set. With the Knights leading 7-4, Osterhoudt and Conrad would start a 6-1 run as Queens took a commanding lead of 13-5.
A 4-2 run by the Mavericks would see them cut Queens advantage down to 15-9 before Franco and Conrad started another 7-2 run as the Knights took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-15 first set victory.
Queens would hit .343 as they tallied 14 kills in the first set.
The Mavericks would open the second set with a 7-3 advantage forcing the Knights to take an early timeout. The stoppage of play would help Queens break the visitors' momentum as Franco started a 5-1 run with Conrad and junior
Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) recording a kill and a service ace to tie the second set at 8-8.
However, Mercy would use a 3-1 run to take an 11-9 lead before Queens battled back with a 6-1 run to take a 15-12 lead.
As the Mavericks cut the Knights advantage down to one, 16-15, senior
Alexis Deodat (Tampa Bay, FL) would take over recording three kills in the Knights 6-0 run for a commanding lead of 22-15. Mercy would get within four, 24-18 before a kill from Conrad helped Queens take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-18 second victory.
For the second straight set, it would be the Mavericks who jumped out in front with a 9-2 advantage. Queens would cut their deficit down to three, 12-9 but the early advantage would help Mercy earn a 25-18 third set victory to force a fourth set.
With the Mavericks looking to force a fifth and deciding set, they would start the fourth set with a 6-2 run before a 7-1 run led by the trio of Boudouris, Conrad, and Franco helped Queens take a 9-7 advantage forcing a Mavericks timeout.
Both sides would trade runs as the Mavericks reclaimed a slim lead of 16-14 before Franco went on a tear in the Knights' 5-0 run to take the lead for good as Queens jumped ahead 19-16.
As the Mavericks used a 2-0 run to cut Queens advantage down to one, 19-18, Franco and Conrad would combine for a 4-1 run as the Knights were two points away from earning their third ECC victory of the year with a 23-19 lead.
Two Knights errors and a kill from the Mavericks would see them cut Queens advantage down to 23-22 forcing a Knights a timeout.
Using the stoppage of play to their advantage, Queens would earn the final two points to earn a 3-1 victory over the Mavericks with a 25-22 fourth set victory.
In the fourth set, Franco and Conrad would combine for 13 kills as the Knights outhit the Mavericks .250 to .146 for the conference victory.
By the Numbers
- Franco led the Knights offense recording her sixth double-double of the year with 15 kills and 12 digs to go with three service aces.
- Conrad tallied 15 kills hitting a scorching .314 on the day to go with eight digs and three service aces.
- Osterhoudt recorded 11 kills with a season-high hitting percentage of .474 to go with two blocks.
- Deodat notched four kills, two blocks, and five digs in the victory.
- Boudouris recorded a match-high 40 assists to go with three digs and one service ace.
- For the fifth time this season, the junior has recorded 40 assists or more.
- Sophomore Sarah Munn (Torrance, CA) notched a team-high 14 digs in the victory.

Stefan Leger and the Knights now open a two-match road stand beginning with a trip to Rockville Centre, N.Y. on Tuesday (Oct. 3) evening against the Lions of Molloy University in ECC play. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
