Volleyball Battles Molloy in ECC Play inside Quealy Gymnasium

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Opening the month of October with a two-match road trip, the Queens College volleyball team traveled to Rockville Centre, N.Y. with an East Coast Conference matchup against the Lions of Molloy University Tuesday evening inside Quealy Gymnasium.

Despite a slow start, the Knights would attempt a comeback rally by winning the third set before the Lions defeated Queens in four sets to the score of 3-1 (Set Scores: 16-25, 11-25, 25-21, 17-25) to take the first meeting of two this season.

Match 15 Recap (Set Scores: 16-25, 11-25, 25-21, 17-25)
  • It was an uncharacteristic start to the match as the Knights looked out of sync in the opening two sets as they fell behind 2-0.
  • The third set would see both teams exchange the first 10 points and with the set tied at 5-5, Queens would use an 8-3 run to take a 13-8 lead.
  • After the Lions cut the Knights advantage down to four, 14-10, senior Alexis Deodat (Tampa Bay, FL) would start a 6-3 run for Queens before an ace from junior Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) and a kill from junior Alicia Cervera (Valencia, Spain) put the Knights up 20-13.
  • A 4-0 run by the Lions would see the home side cut Queens' lead down to three, 20-17 before junior Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) started another 3-0 run for a 23-17 advantage.
  • The Lions would continue to cut into Queens' lead with a 4-1 run before a kill from sophomore Kendall Conrad(Carolltown, PA) helped Queens earn a 25-21 third set victory to force a fourth set.
  • Looking to force their second straight five-setter inside Quealy Gymnasium in back-to-back seasons, it would be another sluggish start to the set as the Knights were unable to solve the ghosts of Rockville Centre with a 25-17 fourth set loss to drop their second ECC match of the season to the final score of 3-1.

By the Numbers
  • Conrad led the Knights offense with a team-high 14 kills to go with four digs.
  • Cervera recorded her first double-double of the season and second of her career with 11 kills and 10 digs.
  • Deodat recorded seven kills and two blocks, while Franco tallied seven kills, eight digs, and one service ace in the match.
  • Boudouris recorded 26 assists,  five digs, and a team-high two service aces.
  • Sophomore Jayna Marie Lorenzo (Rodeo, CA) recorded a season-high 10 assists and five digs.

Next Match: Head Coach Stefan Leger and the Knights conclude the two-match road trip with a visit to Rochester, N.Y. on Sunday (Oct. 8) afternoon as they match up against the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University. First serve is set for noon.
