Crucial Doubles Sweep Leads Women’s Tennis to 4-3 Victory over Adelphi in Regional Play

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning home to the QC Tennis Bubble, the Queens College women's tennis team (9-5 overall) welcomed the Adelphi University Panthers (9-9 overall) to Flushing on Wednesday afternoon in East Regional play.

In a back-and-forth match earning the doubles points would prove to be crucial as the Knights swept the doubles play before both sides split singles action to give Queens a 4-3 victory over the Panthers.

With the win, the Knights improved their overall record to 9-5 on the season and earned their 20th straight victory over the Panthers dating back to the 2001 season.

The Knights began the match taking an early 1-0 lead in doubles competition as the #3 doubles junior duo of Chloe Certain (Obernai, France) and Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) earned a 6-2 victory over Carolina Chaves and Julia Kielan.

Trailing 4-3 at #1 doubles, the #1 pair of seniors Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) fought back with three straight winners over Barbie Quagliardi and Caterina Federici as the Knights pair clinched the doubles points to the score of 6-4 to give Queens a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

The #2 doubles match between junior Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) and freshman Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) against Katarina Liedbeck and Amanda Franstedt went unfinished with the Knights pair up 5-4.

In singles play, Sciarrotta would earn a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kielan at #4 court to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage.

But the Panthers would cut the deficit down to 2-1 as sophomore Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) fell to Franstedt to the score of 6-0, 6-3 at #6 singles.

But Certain would complete her 2-0 day as she defeated Federici to the score of 6-1, 6-4 at #5 singles as Queens were one singles victory away from clinching the match as they took a 3-1 lead.

But once again the Panthers would cut the deficit down to 3-2 as Makal fell to ITA East Regional champion and nationally ranked #29 Sanne Selmer Gilje in three sets.

Makal would take the first set to the score of 6-2 before dropping the final two sets to the score of 6-3, 6-3.

But Queens would earn the match victory at #3 singles as Fawzy defeated Liedbeck to the score of 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 as the Knights earned their fourth victory of the day.

At #2 singles Lamy would drop a hard-fought match against Quagliardi to the score of 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 8-10 to round the regional play.

NEXT MATCH: Head Coach Alan Nagel and the Knights return to cross-divisional play on Sunday (Apr. 9) evening as they match up against DI NEC member Long Island University Sharks. First serve set for 5:00 p.m.
