Women’s Tennis Drops Hard-Fought Match to Division I Seton Hall

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Continuing cross-divisional play, the Queens College women's tennis team (8-5 overall) traveled to South Orange, N.J. with a matchup against Division I Big East member Seton Hall University Pirates (6-9 overall) at Campus Court at Ivy Hill Park Friday afternoon.

In a closely contested match, the Knights dropped two doubles matches in tiebreakers before falling short in singles action to the Pirates to the final score of 5-2.

The Knights began the match behind 1-0 in doubles as the #3 doubles pair of sophomore Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) and Chloe Certain (Obernai, France) fell 6-2 to the pair of Emily O'Donovan and Aina Plana Ventosa.

It was a rally at #1 and #2 doubles court as the #2 doubles pair of junior Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) and freshman Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) fought back and forth against Arabella Meon and Oliwia Kempinski.

But it would be the Pirates pair who clinched the doubles points with a 7-6 (8-6) over the Knights #2 doubles duo.

The Pirates would complete the doubles sweeps at #1 doubles as the senior duo of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) fell in a heartbreaking 7-6 (7-2) match to the duo of Arina Gumerova and Hiba El Khalifi.

In singles play, Makal fell 6-1, 6-4 to Kempinski at #1 singles before Fawy was defeated 6-1, 6-4 by Ventosa as the home side took a 3-0 lead.

Sciarrotta would fall in a closely contested match at #4 singles in two sets. But the senior would take both sets into a tiebreaker against Khalifi as she was defeated 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 as the Pirates clinched the match.

Lamy would earn the first victory of the Knights on the day as she defeated Gumerova to the score of 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) at #2 singles.

At #6 singles, Certain would earn a win as her opponent retired giving Queens their second win of the day before junior Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) fell 8-5 to close out the match with the Pirates winning the match to the final score of 5-2.

NEXT MATCH: Head Coach Alan Nagel and the Knights return to East Regional play on Wednesday (Apr. 5) afternoon as they welcome the Panthers of Adelphi University to Flushing. First serve set for 12:00 p.m.
