FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to Division II action, the Queens College women's tennis team
(7-4 overall) welcomed the Big Blue of Bluefield State University
(0-4 overall) to the QC Tennis Bubble for non-regional action Thursday afternoon.
The Knights began the match earning the doubles points before picking up four singles victories over the Big Blue to earn their seventh victory of the season.
Queens took an early lead into doubles play as the duo of junior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) and freshman
Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) defeated Adriana Torroba and Paulina Moreno to the score of 6-1.
It was back-and-forth action at #1 and #3 doubles, before the senior duo of seniors
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and
Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) gave the home side a 1-0 lead heading into singles play as they defeated Shreya Chakrabarly and Juliana Jimenez to the score of 6-4.
The #3 doubles match between sophomore
Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) and junior
Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) against Virginia Zanotti and Daniela Cruzado went unfinished with the match tied at 5-5.
In singles play, at #6 singles junior
Chloe Certain (Obernai, France) would give Queens a 2-0 lead as she defeated Zanotti to the score of 6-4, 6-0.
Having earned an ITA National Ranking of #46 earlier this week, Fawzy gave Queens a commanding lead of 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jimenez at #3 singles.
The Big Blue would cut the deficit down to 3-1 as Sciarrotta fell to Torroaba in a back-and-forth three-set match to the score of 7-5, 3-6, 5-10.
The Knights would clinch the match as Tarbujara earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Cruzado at #5 singles and take a 4-1 match lead.
Lamy would give Queens their fifth point of the afternoon as she defeated Ghita Courdi to the score of 6-1, 6-1 at #2 singles.
The Big Blue would earn their second point of the afternoon as Makal fell at #1 singles to Chakrabarly in a closely contested match to the score of 6-4, 7-5.
