FLUSHING, N.Y. – Taking a break from East Regional action, the Queens College men's tennis team
(7-2 overall) earned their third straight shutout victory of the season with a 7-0 sweep over Division 2 Big Blue of Bluefield State University
(3-3 overall) inside the Queens College Tennis Bubble Thursday afternoon.
Queens matched against the Big Blue for the third time in program history and first match since the 2012 season which saw the Knights earn a 9-0 victory on April 14, 2012. Thursday's win improved the Knights record to 3-0 over the non-regional foe.
The Knights wasted no time in clinching the double points before picking up six straight singles victory for their third straight sweep victory of the season.
Queens began the afternoon taking an early lead as the sophomore duo of
Philipp Uhde (Heidelberg, Germany) and
Cameron Henricy (Las Palmas, Spain) defeated Luis Agullo and Fabian Avial-Torres to the score of 6-1.
The Knights would clinch the doubles point at #1 doubles as the duo of senior
Kareem Rashad (Alexandria, Egypt) and junior
Roni Rikkonen (Tampere, Finland) defeated the duo of Teddy Razafindratsima and Juan Manuel to the score of 6-4.
The #2 doubles match between senior
Mariano Bibiloni (La Plata, Argentina) and junior
Omar El Shehawey (Cairo, Egypt) against Merlin Mazalto and Jose Marquez went unfinished with the score tied 5-5.
Queens took a 2-0 lead as senior
Lucas Demuth (Buenos Aires, Argentina) defeated Manuel at #3 singles to the score of 6-2, 6-1.
Henricy would put the Knights up 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Agullo at #2 singles as the Knights went ahead 3-0.
Rikkonen would clinch the match for the Knights at #1 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Razafindratsima and take a commanding lead of 4-0.
Continuing their route to a sweep, graduate student
Lluis Miralles Miro (Barcelona, Spain) earned a hard-fought tiebreaker victory at #5 singles over Marquez to the score of 7-6
(7-2), 7-6
(7-3) for a 5-0 lead.
The scoreline would read 6-0 as junior
Francisco Gonzalez (La Plata, Argentina) clinched a three-set victory over Arguello to the score of 6-1, 5-7, 10-5.
Queens would complete the sweep at #4 singles as graduate student
Moritz Borges (Hunxe, Germany) clinched an 8-6 victory over Avail-Torres.
