Women’s Tennis Open Spring Schedule on a Winning Note

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to action for the first time since October, the Queens College women's tennis team served off the first spring match of the season on the right foot in a cross-divisional matchup against Division I NEC member St. Francis College Brooklyn Terriers Sunday evening inside the QC Tennis Bubble.

The Knights began the night earning the doubles points before a Terriers rally in the single competition meant it would require a comeback to earn the first victory of the spring.

In doubles play, Queens #1 doubles duo of seniors Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) cruised to a 6-1 victory over Margherita Fiorio and Mia Skrbinsek.

The Knights would clinch the doubles point at #2 as the duo of junior Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) and freshman Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) earned a 6-1 victory over Lincy Valencia and Nicolle Romero.

The #3 doubles match between sophomore Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) and Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) against Julia Varvarigos and Ximena Cano went unfinished with the Terriers up 5-2.

But having already taken a 1-0 lead to begin singles play, the Terriers would tie the match as the Knights had to forfeit the match at #6 singles.

However, Lamy would give Queens a 2-1 lead as she earned a two-set victory of 6-2, 6-2 over Skrbinsek at #2 singles.

But the Terriers would tally back-to-back victories at #1 and #5 singles as Makal fell to Fiorio to the score of 6-3, 6-4 before Hagishima fell 6-3, 6-1 at #5 singles.

Trailing 3-2, Sciarrotta would rally back from a first-set loss of 6-1 against Varvarigos to tie the match at 3-3 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at #4 singles.

With the match tied at 3-3, Fawzy who fell 6-3 in the first set would rally back to force a third set with a 7-6 (7-5) second-set victory.

Having worked back to tied force winner takes all, the Egyptian native would complete the comeback with a 6-4 third-set victory to give Queens and the Knights their first spring victory of the season.

With the win, the Knights improved to 6-3 overall.

NEXT MATCH: Head Coach Alan Nagel and the Knights hit the road to Philadelphia, PA in a key East Regional matchup on Friday (Mar. 3) afternoon as they take on the Rams of Jefferson University. The first serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
