Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) notched 14 points as the Queens College women's basketball team matched up against the Eagles of Post University inside Drubner Center Wednesday evening.
Game Recap
It would be a back-and-forth affair in the first quarter as both sides traded leads. But with the Knights leading 8-7, the Eagles would end the final 4:16 of the first quarter on a 10-5 run as Queens trailed by four, 17-13 heading into the second quarter.
Queens deficit would grow as high as nine, 23-14 with 8:19 left in the second quarter before the Knights attempted a comeback.
Sophomore center
Gianna Henriques (Bronx, N.Y.) and Awaka would lead the charge as the Knights went on a 5-0 run to get within four, 23-19 with 5:24 to go until halftime.
But as the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to take a 10-point lead of 29-10, the Hyde Park native would help Queens go on an 8-2 run as they trailed by four, 31-27 at halftime.
It would be a scoring drought to begin the third quarter of play before Davis and Awaka opened the scoring on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 31-31 with 7:47 left in the third quarter.
After Post took a 35-33 advantage, junior forward
Lateisha Willis (Nottingham, England) would help the Knights start a 6-0 run as the Knights led 39-35 with 5:27 left in the quarter.
With Queens shooting 50.0% in the third quarter, the visitors would outscore the Eagles 17-9 as they took a 44-40 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
As Queens committed two turnovers to open the fourth quarter, the Eagles would use an 8-0 run to retake the lead to the score of 48-44 with 7:24 left in the game.
A layup by Davis would quickly start an 8-1 run for the Knights to take a 52-49 lead, but with 3:45 remaining in the game, the Eagles would end the game on a 12-3 run to defeat Queens to the final score of 61-55 Wednesday evening.
By the Numbers
- For the second straight game, Awaka led the Knights in scoring as the rookie recorded her first career double-double with a team-high-and-career-best of 23 points (9-12 FG) and 13 rebounds to go with one steal.
- Davis fell short of her first double-double of the year as the sophomore recorded 14 points (5-16 FG) to go with nine rebounds and four assists.
- As a team, the Knights shot 38.6% as they went 22-57 from the field, while the Eagles shot 34.8% going 23-66 from the field.
- The Knights would dominate the third quarter of play as they shot 50.0% from the field going 7-14 while holding Post to 28.5% on 4-14 shooting as Queens outscored the home side 17-9.
Next Game
The Knights conclude the week at home on Saturday (Nov. 18) afternoon in their first home game of the year as they welcome the Bears of Bloomfield College to town. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
