Quest for ECC Crown: Men’s Soccer Earns #3 Seed to ECC Tournament

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's soccer team will make their second consecutive postseason appearance as sixth-year head coach Frank Vertullo and the Knights have earned the #3 seed to the ECC Men's Soccer Tournament.
 
Entering Saturday's final ECC match of the year, the Knights needed a win to officially clinch hosting right for the Quarterfinal round and they would do so in convincing fashion with a shutout victory over D'Youville on Senior Day giving them hosting right for the second straight season.
 
Earning the #3 seed, the Knights will host the First Round game at Knights Field which gets underway Wednesday (Nov. 1) evening at 7:00 p.m.

Regular Season Finish (8-7-2 Overall Record, 5-3 ECC Record)

With the regular season concluded, Vertullo and the Knights take an overall record of 8-7-2 and a 5-3 ECC record into postseason play.
 
In 17 matches played, the Knights have set a new program record for goals during a single season with 46 goals scored in the regular season averaging 2.71 goals per game as they recorded 142 shots on goal totaling 43 assists.
 
While on defense they would hold their opponents to 28 goals as they registered 65 saves and recorded four shutouts on the year.
 
On the offense end sophomore Harry Cooke (Market Drayton, England) leads the offense having recorded 22 points for eight goals and six assists to go with three game-winning goals. Cooke has earned four ECC Honor Roll spots on the weekly award sheet.
 
While senior Adolfo Martinez Paquet (Sevilla, Spain) is second on the team with 17 points having tallied three goals and a team-high 11 assists on the year. Paquet has earned two honor roll spots in the men's soccer weekly award sheet. With a team-high 11 assists, the senior became the first Knight to register double-digit assists in a single season which sees him tied for third in the nation.
 
On the defensive end, four goalkeepers have earned starts this year and have combined for 64 saves and 1.65 goals against average with four shutouts.

Back to Postseason Play

For the second straight season, the Knights have earned hosting right as they begin their quest for an ECC title on friendly grounds.
 
Having earned the #3 seed, Vertullo and the Knights will welcome #6 seed fellow CUNY member Dolphins of College of Staten Island to town on Wednesday (Nov. 1) evening with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
 
During the regular season, Queens would earn a 2-1 victory over the Dolphins in Staten Island.

College of Staten Island Dolphins Preview

Staten Island will enter Flushing with an overall record of 4-6-4 and finished ECC play with a 2-3-3 record. The Dolphins have earned the #6 seed with a victory over Molloy University on Saturday (Oct. 28) afternoon.
 
Miguel Espinosa leads the offense having tallied eight goals for 16 points, while Daniel Angulo has recorded three goals and two assists on the season for eight points.
 
In goal, Amari Thompson has tallied 39 saves and holds a 1.29 goals against average.

If Knights Advance

A win over CSI will move the Knights' postseason journey away from home as they will travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. on Saturday (Nov. 4) afternoon setting up a clash against defending champions & #2 seed Mavericks of Mercy University at noon.
