FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to the East Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship, the #1 seed Queens College women's team matched up against defending champions and #2 seed Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College inside the QC Tennis Bubble.
Queens would take an early lead as they clinched the doubles points, but four singles defeats with two matches going the distance would see the Knights' quest for an ECC title fall short as they were defeated to the final score of 4-1 Saturday evening.
With the loss, the Knights see their record move to 8-1 on the year.
Doubles Play
The #3 doubles pair of junior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) & senior
Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) would quickly put the Knights up 1-0 with a 6-2 victory over Amanda Kadiri and Kateryna Kryuchkova.
With the remaining two doubles matches going back and forth, the Knights would clinch the doubles point as the #1 court of senior
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and junior
Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) earned a 6-4 victory over the duo of Samantha Robles and Ebba Rosberg.
While the #2 doubles pair of sophomore
Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) and graduate student
Eva Rivoal (Saint Denis de Pile, France) went unfinished with the Knights duo up 5-4.
Singles Play
Needing three singles victories to clinch the championship crown, Queens would fall in four straight singles on the evening.
Makal would fall to Viktoriia Pavlovets to the score of 6-0, 6-1 at #2 singles.
While Tarbujaru fell next at #6 singles against Kryuchkova to the score of 6-4, 6-3.
With four singles remaining, the Knights would fight back as all four matches went to the deciding third set.
But it would be the Spartans who would clinch the crown with victories at #4 and #5 singles.
Lamy would fall in three sets against Robles at #4 court to the score of 6-3, 4-6, 1-6 before Berggren fell at #5 singles to the score of 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 for the Spartans to clinch the crown.
With the fall segment of the Knights scheduled concluded, head coach
Alan Nagel and the Knights take an 8-1 record into the spring semester as they look to bolster their resume for an At-Large bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament.
The spring schedule will be released in February.
