Men’s Soccer Game Day Preview – Quest for Top 4 Postseason Spot as Men’s Soccer Match Up Against Spartans and Lions

FLUSHING, N.Y. - High-scoring affairs last week as the Queens College men's soccer team battled in a non-conference loss before ending the week on a high note with an East Coast Conference victory.
 
It is an all ECC affair this week as the race for postseason heats up as the Knights welcome the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College to town on Wednesday (Oct. 18) evening. The week concludes in Rockville Centre, N.Y. on Saturday (Oct. 21) afternoon with a matchup against the Lions of Molloy University.

  • Wednesday (Oct. 18) – St. Thomas Aquinas College – 7:30 pm
    • Series History: 5-7-3

Queens College Knights Preview (6-5-2 Overall Record, 3-2 ECC)
  • Head Coach Frank Vertullo and the Knights went 1-1 on the week as they fell 3-4 to Adelphi at home before ending the week with a 4-3 victory over Roberts Wesleyan Saturday evening in conference play.
  • On Tuesday (Oct. 17) Men's Soccer finds themselves ranked #10 in the East Region.
  • With three ECC matches left on the docket, the Knights are fourth in the standing.
  • Sophomore Harry Cooke (Market Drayton, England) leads the offense having recorded 17 points for seven goals and three assists.
    • Cooke has earned four ECC Honor Roll spots on the weekly award sheet.
  • Senior Adolfo Martinez Paquet (Sevilla, Spain) is second on the team with 16 points having tallied three goals and a team-high 10 assists on the year.
    • On Monday (Oct. 9) Paquet earned his second ECC Honor Roll spot of the year.
    • Paquet has registered a point in 10 straight matches.
  • In net, junior Juan Cruz Ladino (Cali, Colombia) has earned nine starts making 35 saves, and holds a 1.97 goals against average.
    • Ladino was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday (Sept. 18) afternoon.

St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans Preview (7-2-3 Overall Record, 4-0-1 ECC)
  • STAC enters Flushing with an overall record of 7-2-3 and 4-0-1 in conference play. They are coming off a 2-0 victory over CSI in ECC play.
  • Wednesday's match will be the 16th match against the Spartans in program history with the Knights trailing the series 5-7-3 overall.
  • The Knights are looking for their first home victory over the Spartans since the 2017 season when they earned a 2-0 victory.
  • Kevon Evans leads the offense with 25 points having recorded nine goals and seven assists, while Alejandro Zuniga has tallied 14 points for four goals and six assists.
  • In net, Calle olle Petter Gunnarsson has recorded 52 saves and holds a 1.11 goals against average.

Molloy University Lions Preview (2-9-3 Overall Record, 1-3-1 ECC)
  • Molloy enters the week with an overall record of 2-9-3 and 1-3-1 in ECC play. The Lions will host D'Youville on Wednesday before welcoming the Knights on Saturday afternoon.
  • Saturday's meeting will be the 17th meeting in program history as the Knights lead the All-Time series 9-6-1.
  • The Knights are looking for their fourth straight road win over the Lions dating back to the 2016 season.
  • Ryan Dobson leads the offense having tallied six points with four assists and one goal, while three Lions are tied in second with four points and two goals.
  • In goal, Dennis Mejia has played in 13 matches recording 49 saves, and holds a 1.81 goals against average.

Non-conference play concludes on Wednesday (Oct. 25) afternoon as the Knights travel to Thomas Jefferson University.
