FLUSHING, N.Y. – Opening a two-match homestand, the Queens College women's tennis team welcomed the Chargers of the University of New Haven to Flushing for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
It would be a hard-fought doubles point to take a 1-0 match lead before the Knights earned five singles victories to earn a 6-1 victory over their non-conference foe inside the QC Tennis Bubble.
With the victory, the Knights improved to 4-0 overall on the season.
Doubles
In doubles play, the #2 doubles court pair of graduate students
Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and
Eva Rivoal (Saint Denis de Pile, France) would fall 6-3 to the duo of Lucia Placidi and Risako Umekuni.
The Knights would battle back at the #3 doubles court as the pair of junior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) and senior
Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) earned a 6-3 victory over the duo of Madi Mabrito and Alexa Orlando to knot the match at 1-1.
With the doubles point up for grabs, the Knights would earn a 7-6
(7-5) victory at #1 doubles court as senior
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and junior
Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) defeated Karim Carreras and Valentinna Ferrarini to go up 1-0 heading into singles play.
Singles
Needing three singles victories to clinch the match, Tarbujaru would earn a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Placidi at the #5 court.
Berggren put the home side in a commanding lead of 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Alyssa Rodriguez at the #4 court.
Fawzy at #3 court would defeat Umekuni to the score of 6-2, 6-3 as the Knights clinched the match and took a commanding lead of 4-0.
Bergmann would put the Knights up 5-0 with a three-set victory over Alexa Orlando with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-3 victory at the #6 court.
At #1 singles Rioval would earn a tough victory over Ferrarini with a 6-4, 6-3 victory as Queens moved to 4-0 on the season.
