Five MBB Knights Score in Double-Figures as Knights Defeat D’Youville Friday Evening

FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Friday evening, senior William Ellis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) led the offense as five Queens College men's basketball players scored in double figures to help the Knights defeat the visiting Saints of D'Youville University 80-65 in East Coast Conference play inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

In a game that saw 41 fouls called, the Saints would open the scoring at the free throw line as they went 1-of-2 at the line with only 14 seconds gone in the game. 
 
Sophomore Shamar Chester (Queens, N.Y.) would open the scoring for the Knights as the home side put together an 8-0 run from 19:32 to 17:23 for an early 8-1 lead. 
 
The Saints would start to cut into the Knights' lead despite the home side extending their lead to nine on four different occasions. 
 
After a made free throw by sophomore Elijah Blackman (Queens, N.Y.) put Queens up by 11, 33-22 with 4:48 to go, a 13-4 run by the Saints would see the lead trimmed down to two, 37-35 with 55 seconds left until halftime. 
 
But senior Tyler Carey (Bay Shore, N.Y.) would lead the Knights on a 6-0 run to end the first half as Queens took a 43-35 lead into the locker rooms as they held the Saints scoreless for the final 28 seconds for an eight-point edge. 
 
D'Youville opened the second half on an 11-5 run as they trimmed the home side lead down to two, 48-42 with 17:00 remaining in the game. 
 
Both sides would go scoreless from 16:29 to 13:55 as they combined for 0-6 from the field with three turnovers before Blackman stopped the drought with two made free throws. 
 
The Saints would get close as four, 53-49 with 11:58 to go before the trio of Blackman, Ellis and Carey put Queens on a 9-2 run as they took an 11-point lead of 62-51 with 7:43 left in the game. 
 
After the Saints got within 10, 69-59 with 3:24 to go, Queens would put the game away with a 9-2 run over the next two minutes to earn their fourth ECC victory of the season. 

By The Numbers
  • Ellis led the offense with a game-high 16 points (5-14 FG, 4-5 FT) to go with four rebounds off the bench.
  • While Jayden Seraphin (Lakeview, N.Y.) recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points (5-9 FG), 11 rebounds and a career-high six steals on the evening.
    • The Lakeview native extended his double-digit scoring streak to 11 games.
  • In 12 minutes of action and with four fouls, Chester tallied 13 points (3-5 FG, 6-6 FT), while it was a career-night for Blackman who tied a career-high 11 points (3-8 FG, 4-6 FT)  to go with a career-high eight rebounds off the bench.
  • Carey recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 10 points (3-10 FG, 4-5 FT) along with a game-high 13 rebounds, and tied a career-high six blocks on the evening.
    • It was the second time Carey has recorded six blocks in a single game with the last one coming against the Saints on Feb. 24, 2022.
  • Queens shot 41.9% as they went 26-62 from the field while holding the Saints to 21-65 from the field on a 32.2% shooting performance. 
    • The Knights made a season-high 23 free throws in 32 attempts.
    • Queens held an overall edge with 53-41 rebounding margin with a slim 19-18 second chance points, 21-17 (18-18) points off turnovers, and 13-2 margin on fast break points, 37-22 bench points and 38-26 points in the paint on the evening.
