DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The sophomore duo of
Aalia Carlson (Montclair, N.J.) and
Chelsea Reeves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) combined for 35 points for the Queens College women's basketball team Saturday afternoon against the Mavericks of Mercy College at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center in East Coast Conference action.
Game Recap
It was a back-and-forth game in the opening minutes of the first quarter, but with the Knights leading 6-4, the Mavericks would tally an 11-4 run to end the stanza as the host took a five-point lead of 15-10 heading into the second quarter.
The lead would balloon to eight, 18-10, with 8:53 left in the second quarter before the Knights ended their scoreless drought on a Carlson three-pointer to bring them within five, 18-13.
Two made free throws from freshman
Graciella Gardner (Newark Valley, N.Y.) brought the Knights within four, 19-15 with 8:04 to go before Queens went into another scoreless drought.
The Mavericks would extend their lead to six, 21-15 with 7:04 before both sides combined to go 0-5 over the next three minutes of play.
Carlson would end the drought as the sophomore led the Knights offense with 10 points in their 10-4 run to end the second quarter.
Carlson would lead both teams with game-high 13 points at halftime shooting 71.4% from the field as the sophomore went 5-7 with three made three-pointers, but the Knights would go into halftime trailing by three, 28-25.
Queens opened the scoring in the third quarter as junior
Kendra McPeek (Binghamton, N.Y.) went 1-2 at the charity stripe before Carlson's fourth long distance shot gave the visitors a slim lead of 29-28 with 7:15 left in the quarter.
After holding the Mavericks 0-3 from the field and two turnovers for the first three minutes of the third quarter, Mercy would use a 7-0 run from 6:59 to 4:19 as they reclaimed the lead.
Reeves would end the scoreless drought for the Knights as she went 3-4 at the free throw line before Carlson's fifth three-pointer of the game brought Queens within two, 37-35 with a minute left in the third.
The Mavericks would extend their lead to four, 39-35 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Queens struggled to get their offense going in the fourth quarter, while the Mavericks extended their lead to 12, 47-35 with 4:55 remaining in the game.
Reeves would lead the late charge as Queens ended the game on a 13-3 run over the final 3:58 minute of play as they forced three Mavericks turnovers but a jumper with 1:02 by the host would ensure the late rally would be in vain as Mercy fended off the rally to take the first meeting of the season to the final score of 50-48.

- The five made three-pointers are a season-high by a Knights this season.
- Carlson's five made three-pointers are a career-high for the sophomore overtaking the four made shots the Montclair native made last season against STAC on February 12.
- Reeves notched 14 points (4-11 FG) with three rebounds and three assists.
- While rookie Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded six points (3-7 FG) to go with a team-high nine rebounds.
- The Knights shot 34.7% going 17-49 from the field, while the Mavericks shot 35.7% from the field with a 20-56 field goal performance.
- Queens added 10 assists on 17 made field goals.
