MBB Carey Records Career-High 22 Points Against Conference Leading Spartans

FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Wednesday night senior Tyler Carey (Bay Shore, N.Y.) recorded his sixth double-double of the season with a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds, while four Queens College men's basketball Knights scored in double figures against the visiting Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium in East Coast Conference action.

It was a quick start to the game as both teams opened the game matching each other for shots, but with the game tied 5-5 just 18:31 on the game clock, the Spartans would tally a 14-0 run from the 18:21 mark to the 15:23 mark to take a 14 point lead of 19-5.
 
Sophomore Jayden Seraphin (Lakeview, N.Y.) would end the scoreless drought for Queens on a second-chance layup before a three-point play by Carey saw both trades 10 points. 
 
The Knights would trade back-to-back buckets but after a jumper from the Spartans saw them retake a 17 point of 35-18 with 10:12 to go until halftime, junior Malik Bentinck (Queens, N.Y.) and sophomore Walter DeFreitas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) would spark 14-2 run for Queens as they cut a 17 point deficit down to five, 37-32 with 6:26 to go until halftime.
 
The visitors would extend the lead back to 10, 42-32 with a 5-0 run with 5:00 to go in the first half. 
 
Sophomore Elijah Blackman (Queens, N.Y.) and Carey would use another 12-4 as they cut the double-digit deficit down to two with 1:48 to go. 
 
After both sides combined to miss their next eight shots, a last-second layup by the visitors would allow them to take a four-lead lead of 48-44 heading into halftime.
 
Both sides would trade buckets in the opening four minutes of the second half as Carey and DeFreitas helped Queens stay within striking distance of tying the game. 
 
As a jumper by Carey brought Queens within two, 56-54 with 16:23 to go in the game, another 10-2 run by the Spartans would allow them to stay ahead of the Knights before the visitors closed out the game with a 97-81 victory Wednesday evening. 
 
By The Numbers
  • Carey recorded his sixth double-double of the season with a game and career-high 22 points (9-13 FG) to go with 11 rebounds and four blocks.
  • Seraphin continued his double-digit scoring streak with 13 points (6-10 FG), seven rebounds, three blocks, and one steal. 
  • Freshman Eric Tynes (Springfield, MA.) recorded 10 points (3-10 FG, 2-6 3PT) to go with one block and two steals, while sophomore Shamar Chester (Queens, N.Y.) notched 10 points (4-12 FG) with three assists.
  • It was a career-high night for DeFreitas as the sophomore recorded 10 points (5-7 FG) to go with four rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 17 minutes off the bench. 
  • Despite the Knights shooting 49.3% as they went 34-69 from the field, the Spartans would shoot 49.4% from the field going 39-79 on the evening.
  • In a game where the stats were close as they can get with Queens holding an 18-12 advantage on second-chance points, STAC with a slim 15-14 edge on points off turnovers, the Spartans shooting 61.1% from deep (11-18) would prove to be the difference as the Knights were held to 3-18 from downtown on 16.7% shooting on the evening.
