FLUSHING, N.Y. – For the second straight East Coast Conference game sophomore
Chelsea Reeves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Queens College women's basketball team offense with a game-high 27 points against the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Game Recap
It was a slow start for the Knights as they missed their first four shots, while the Firebirds jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Reeves would get Queens on the board at the 6:49 mark as the Knights went on a 6-2 run to get within two, 8-6 with 4:30 left.
UDC would go on a 6-0 run as they took a 14-6 lead before the sophomore paced Queens with a 7-4 run to end the first quarter but would trail by five, 18-13 heading into the second quarter.
Queens opened the second quarter with a 7-3 run as they cut their deficit down to 21-20 with 7:42 left until halftime.
The Knights would go into a scoreless drought as the home side went on a 7-0 run to take a nine-point lead of 29-20 with 4:58 to go.
Queens would trade buckets to end the second quarter, but the Knights would trail by 14, 41-27 heading into the locker rooms at halftime.
Both teams would struggle in the third quarter but despite the Knights shooting slightly better than the Firebirds, they would trail by 11, 52-41 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Queens picked up the intensity in the fourth quarter as they shot 50.0% from the field with Reeves and graduate student
Raven Pitt (Valley Stream, N.Y.) combining for 17 points.
As Queens held UDC to 38.5% from the field in the fourth quarter, free throw shooting would help the Firebirds maintain their lead throughout the game as they went 11-14 from the charity stripe to defeat the Knights to the final score of 73-62 Saturday afternoon.
Game Highlights
- Reeves recorded her third double-double of the season with a game-high 27 points (9-18 FG), 10 rebounds, and two steals to lead the offense.
- Pitt recorded 10 points (4-16 FG) to go with a team-high six assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
- Freshman Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) fell short of her third double-double as the rookie recorded eight points (3-10 FG) to go with 10 rebounds and team-high three steals.
- Queens added 14 assists on 23 made field goals.
- The Knights shot 34.8% going 23-66 from the field, while the Firebirds were held to 33.3% from the field with a 21-63 field goal performance.
- Free throw shooting margin would help the Firebirds as they went 26-33 from the line shooting 78.8% while the Knights went 14-19 at the line shooting 73.7% on the afternoon.
