Volleyball Opens ECC Play Against Defending Champions Daemen

AMHERST, N.Y. –  On Saturday afternoon, the Queens College volleyball team opened up a three-game road trip as the Knights begin East Coast Conference play.

The road stand served up beginning in Amherst as the Knights took on defending ECC champions Daemen University Wildcats at Lumsden Gymnasium. But the Wildcats' experience would overmatch a young Knights squad as Queens were swept 3-0 (Set Scores: 19-25, 13-25, 15-25) to begin conference play.

Recap (Final Score 0-3 19-25, 13-25, 15-25)

The Knights began the first set with a 4-1 lead before Daemen tallied three straight points to tie the first 4-4.

Trailing 10-9, senior Alexis Deodat (Tampa Bay, FL) led a 3-0 run as Queens took a 12-10 lead. But the Wildcats would tally an 8-1 run to jump ahead 18-13.

The Knight would attempt a comeback as they cut the deficit down to two, 20-18. However Daemen would close out the first set with a 5-1 run, 25-19 to take a 1-0 lead.

Both sides would exchange points early on in the second set, but with the Knights leading 5-4, a Wildcats 5-1 run would swing the momentum towards the home side.

But with the Knights committing seven attacking errors, Queens would trail 2-0 going into the third set as they fell 25-13.

It was a sluggish start to the third set as Queens fell behind 9-2 in the early going. But sophomore Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) would lead a fightback with multiple kills.

As the Knights cut their deficit down to three, 16-13, a 6-0 run by the Wildcats would squeeze the momentum as Daemen picked up the 3-0 sweep with a 25-15 third set victory.

Match Highlights
  • Freshman Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) led the offense with six kills.
  • While Franco tallied five kills and three digs.
  • Sophomore Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) tallied 15 assists and six digs.
UP NEXT: Head Coach Stefan Leger and his Knights conclude the Buffalo trip Sunday (Sept. 24) afternoon with a match-up against D'Youville University Saints. First serve is set for noon.
