Women’s Tennis Roll Past Daemen to Open ECC Play

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's tennis opened their 2022-23 season in style as the Knights defeated the visiting Wildcats of Daemen University 7-0 Friday afternoon at the QC Tennis Bubble. 
 
Doubles Play
Head coach Alan Nagel handed newcomers freshman Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France), and junior Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) debuts as the duo teamed up as the Knights' #2 double pair. 
 
While the senior duo of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) continued their partnership together from last season as the #1 pair. 
 
While Senior Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) and junior Mariana Ling (Orlando, Florida) teamed up as the #3 doubles pair. 
 
Schmidt/Ling made quick work of their match as they swept the duo of Mackenzie Schayes/Ailish McDevitt to the score of 6-0.
 
The Knights would clinch the doubles point at #1 singles as Makal/Sciarrotta defeated Frida Rubio/Yinett Del Leon to the score of 6-1. 
 
Playing their first competition together, the #2 pair of Lamy/Tarbujaru opened their Knights career with a 6-4 victory over Kista Scime/Carly Armitage as Queens swept the doubles competition.
 
Singles Play
 
Sophomore Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) made her singles debut at #6 singles for the Knights and made quick of McDevitt as the sophomore shutout her opponent to the score of 6-0, 6-0 for a 2-0 lead. 
 
At #3 singles, Sciarrotta continued the shutout with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Leon. 
 
While Tarbujaru would clinch the match for the Knights at #4 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory Armitage. Ling at #5 singles put Queens up 5-0 as she dispatched Schayes to the score of 6-0, 6-1. 
 
Makal at #1 singles earned a 6-4 first-set victory over Rubio before the senior took full control in the second set with a 6-0 win to put the Knights one win away from a sweep. 
 
At #2 singles, Lamy won the first set 6-0 over Scime, but the rookie would have to earn the second set victory with a 7-5 victory to give Queens their first sweep of the season.  
 
UP NEXT: Head Coach Alan Nagel and his Knights continue ECC play as the Knights welcome the Saints of D'Youville University on Saturday (Sept. 17) morning. First serve is set for 10:00 A.M.
