FLUSHING, N.Y. – Continuing East Coast Conference play, the Queens College women's tennis team swept the visiting Saints of D'Youville University to the score of 7-0 Saturday morning at the QC Tennis Bubble.
With the win, the Knights improve to 2-0 overall, and 2-0 in ECC play to begin the season.
Queens started the match up 1-0 with the visitors only fielding five players leaving the Knights needing one double competition win and two singles wins to clinch the overall victory.
Doubles Play
With no #3 doubles to play, the Knights clinched the doubles points as the #1 doubles pair of seniors
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and
Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) defeated the Saints duo of Yuliia Kashtelian/Khushi Agarwal to the score of 6-3.
Queens would complete the sweep in doubles as the #2 doubles duo of freshman
Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) and junior
Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) picked up a 6-2 victory over Paola Ermina/Julia Clapper.
Singles Play
Leading 2-0 and no #6 singles play, head Coach
Alan Nagel promoted Lamy to #1 singles and Tarbujaru to #2 singles, while junior
Mariana Ling (Orlando, Florida) was promoted to #4 and sophomore
Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) played at #5 singles.
Tarbujaru made quick work of Agarwal at #2 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. While Sciarrotta clinched the match at #3 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ermina.
At #5 singles Hagishima defeated Taylor-Anne Austin to the score of 6-2, 6-0 to keep the shutout intact.
Ling shutout Clapper at #4 singles to the score of 6-0, 6-0 giving the Knights a 6-0 advantage.
Playing #1 singles, rookie Lamy defeated Kashtelian to the score of 6-1, 6-4 to help Queens start ECC play with a 2-0 record.

Alan Nagel and his Knights will now use the next few days to prepare for the ITA East Region Tournament beginning Thursday (Sept. 22) morning at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. First Round matches are slated to begin at 9:00 A.M.
