Women’s Tennis Defeats Goldey-Beacom 5-2 in Regional Play

FLUSHING, N.Y. – As the race for a NCAA Women's Tennis tournament at-large bid kicks into high gear, the #48 nationally-ranked Queens College women's tennis defeated the visiting Goldey-Beacom University Lightning 5-2 Tuesday afternoon inside QC Tennis Bubble. 
 
In the first NCAA Regional ranking released on April 12, the Knights are ranked #4 with East Coast Conference foes University of the District of Columbia at #2 and St. Thomas Aquinas College at #3. 
 
With the win, the Knights moved to 9-7 overall, while the Lightning moved to 6-8 overall.  
 
Doubles Competition
 
Queens took an early lead into doubles play as the #2 doubles duo of Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden) / junior Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) swept Kristin Radeke/Andrea Fresneda to the score of 6-0. 
 
But the visitors would tie the doubles competition as the #3 doubles duo of freshman Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) / sophomore Mariana Ling (Orlando, Fla) fell 6-3 to Elin Anderson/Imane Van Veen to the score of 6-3. 
 
With the doubles points up for grabs, the #1 doubles junior duo of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) / Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y) battled after trailing 5-4 to win in a tiebreaker fashion over Salome Lang/Maria Bruno to the score of 7-6 (7-4) to give the Knights a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. 
 
Singles Competition 
 
Sciarrotta quickly put the Knights up 2-0 as she defeated Fresneda to the score of 6-3, 6-1 at #4 singles. 
 
Ulander put the home side in a commanding 3-0 lead as she dispatched Radeke at #2 singles to the score of 6-3, 6-1. 
 
The visitors would cut trim Queens' advantage to 3-1 as Schmidt fell 7-5, 6-2 at #6 singles to Anderson. 
 
But Fawzy would clinch the match for the Knights at #3 singles as she defeated Veen to the score of 6-4, 6-2. 
 
At #5 singles junior Chole Certain (Obernai, France) put the Knights up 5-1 as she won in a three-set match over Bruno to the score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. 
 
Makal would fall at #1 singles in a three-set match to Lang to the score of 6-4, 0-6, 4-6 to bring the final match score to 5-2. 
 
UP NEXT: Head coach Alan Nagel and the Knights continue regional play Thursday (Apr. 19) morning as they welcome Adelphi University Panthers to Flushing. The first serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
