FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Sunday afternoon, the Queens College women's tennis team used their doubles competition point to cruise through five singles victory as the Knights defeated the visiting Southern New Hampshire University Penmen inside the friendly confines of the QC Tennis Bubble.
With the win, the Knights improved to 8-6 overall, while the Penmen moved to 11-4 on the season.
Doubles Competition
Queens took an early 1-0 as the Knights' #3 doubles duo of freshman
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) / sophomore
Mariana Ling (Orlando, Fla) defeated the Penmen duo of Elizabeth Dwyer/Mina Houge to the score of 6-2.
But the Penmen would tie the doubles competition as the Knights' #1 doubles junior duo of
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) / Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y) fell to Natalie Kallmunzerov/Magdalena Hubickova to the score of 6-4.
But Queens would take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play as the #2 doubles pair of senior
Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden) / junior
Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) picked up a 6-3 victory over Alexxa Etienne/Guntra Upeniece.
Singles Competition
Sciarrotta would put the Knights up 2-0 as the junior defeated Houge in straight sets to the score of 6-1, 6-1 at #4 singles.
The Penmen would cut the Knights' advantage down to 2-1 as Makal fell to ITA East Region Singles champion Kallmunzerov in straight sets to the score of 6-0, 6-2 at #1 singles.
But junior
Chole Certain (Obernai, France) put the Knights up 3-1 following a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #6 singles over Dwyer.
Fawzy clinched the match for the Knights at #4 singles as the rookie defeated Etienne to the score of 6-4, 6-2.
At #2 singles, it was a hard-fought victory for Ulander but the senior would prevail over Hubickova with a 7-5, 7-5 two-set victory.
Schmidt would complete the 6-1 victory for the Knights with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 victory at #5 singles over Upeniece.
