Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Sciarrotta & Certain Win Singles Matches but WTEN Falls to DI LIU

FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the Queens College women's tennis team gave it their all, but the Knights would fall short in a hard-fought cross-divisional matchup to LIU Sharks to the final score of 5-2. 

Doubles Competition
 
The Sharks took control early on as they swept doubles action 3-0. 
 
The Knights' #3 doubles duo of freshman Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt)  junior Chole Certain (Obernai, France) fell first to the score of 6-2 against Phoebe Watson/Bianca Compuesto. 
 
The visitors would clinch the doubles point as Queens #1 doubles junior duo of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) / Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y) fell to Valentina Dancenco/Sofiya Kuzina to the score of 6-4/ 
 
LIU swept doubles competition as #2 doubles pair of senior Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden) / junior Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) were defeated by Elinor Storkaas/Victoria Erechtchenko to the score of 6-2. 
 
Singles Competition 

 
Sciarrotta would tie the match as she swept Storkaas at #4 singles to the score of 6-4, 6-2. 
 
But the Sharks would retake the lead as Ulander fell at #2 singles to Dancenco to the score of 6-2 before falling short in a hard-fought second set to the score of 7-5. 
 
But Certain tied the match 2-2 as she picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory at #6 singles over Watton. 
 
But Fawzy fell at #3 singles as the Sharks reclaimed the lead 3-2 as Compuesto won 6-4, 6-3. 
 
Down to the last two singles matches at #1 and #5 as both matches went to the third set. But Makal who had fought back to tie the #1 singles after a 6-1 defeat in the first set, won the second set to the score of 6-3 before falling short in the tiebreaker to the score of 6-4 as LIU clinched the match 4-2. 
 
Sophomore Mariana Ling (Orlando, Fla) forced a third set after falling 6-2 in the first set with a 6-3 second victory. Kate Jorjoliani would clinch a final 5-2 scoreline for the visitors with a 6-4 victory in the third set. 
 
UP NEXT: Head coach Alan Nagel and the Knights are on break until Saturday (Apr. 9) as they travel to Hempstead, N.Y. for their fourth Division I opponent of the spring season as they take on the Hofstra University Pride. The first serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
