WTEN Suffers Heartbreaking Loss to DI Rider University

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Playing their second Division I team of the spring season, the Queens College women's tennis (7-5 overall) fell short as they dropped a 4-3 match to MAAC member Rider University Broncs Tuesday afternoon inside the Queens College Tennis Bubble. 

Doubles Competition
 
The Knights would take an early 1-0 lead in the doubles competition as the #2 doubles pair of Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden) / Mariana Ling (Orlando, Fla) took a 6-3 win over Broncs pair of Avery Oppenheim/Capucine Thuilot. 
 
Queens would clinch the doubles point as the Knights' #1 doubles junior duo of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) / Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y) earned a hard-fought 7-5 victory over Leila Koster/Angelica Garcia. 
 
But the Broncs #3 doubles duo of Agnese Ceccarelli/Ally Garofoli defeated the pair of freshman Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) / junior Chole Certain (Obernai, France) to the score of 6-4. 
 
Singles Competition 
 
The visitors would tie the match as Thuilot defeated Ulander at #2 singles to the score of 6-2, 6-1. 
 
But Fawzy would give reclaim the lead for the Knights as she shutout Oppenheim in the first set 6-0 before completing the two-set victory to the score of 6-3. 
 
Makal gave Queens a 3-1 lead at #1 singles as she defeated Koster to the score of 6-3, 6-3 putting Queens one match away from victory. 
 
But the visitors would battle back as they won the remaining three singles matches. Sciarrotta fell first to the score of 6-4, 6-3 at #4 singles against Garofoli. Rider would tie the match 3-3 as Certain fell at #5 singles to Ceccarelli to the score of 6-3, 6-4. 
 
Down to the last match at #6 singles, Ling suffered a tough first set loss to the score of 7-5 before Broncs Garcia clinched the match with a second set victory of 6-4 as the Knights fell 4-3 on the afternoon. 
 
UP NEXT: Head coach Alan Nagel and the Knights continue cross-divisional matches as they welcome NEC member Wagner College Seahawks to Flushing Friday (Mar. 25) afternoon. The first serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
