WTEN Rolls Past Jefferson in Regional Play

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Following the doubles point victory, the Queens College women's tennis team (7-4 overall) never looked back as they won five singles matches to defeat the visiting Rams of Thomas Jefferson University (8-6 overall) Friday afternoon inside the Queens College Tennis Bubble.

Doubles Competition

Queens took an early 1-0 lead as the Knights' #1 doubles junior duo of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) / Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) defeated Nicole Hrbkova / Noelle Frenzel to the score of 6-4.

The Knights would take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play as the #2 doubles pair of Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden) / Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) took a 6-3 win over Rams pair of Ines Blanc/Stanislava Norets.

It would be a hard-fought defeat for the Knights #3 doubles pair of freshman Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) sophomore Mariana Ling (Orlando, Fla) as the duo fell to the score of 7-5 against Anna Morgillo/Manni Zhang.

Singles Competition

Fawzy wasted no time giving the Knights a 2-0 lead as she quickly dispatched Blanc at #3 singles to the score of 6-1, 6-0. After the Egyptian native fell behind 1-0 in the first set, she would win the next 12 points shutting out Blanc for her second singles victory of the spring season.

Ulander would fall at #2 singles to Frenzel to the score of 6-3, 6-3 as the Rams cut the deficit down to 2-1.

But Makal who earned an ITA national ranking of #66 on Thursday (Mar. 17) convincingly defeated Hrbkova as she won 6-2, 6-2 giving Queens a 3-1 lead.

At #4 singles, Sciarrotta would clinch the match for the Knights with a two-set victory over Norets winning the first set 6-1 but would need a second set tiebreaker to clinch the match with a 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Junior Chole Certain (Obernai, France) at #5 singles would give Queens a 5-1 advantage with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Zhang before Ling closed out Friday's match with a two-set victory over Morgillo to the score of 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) for a 6-1 victory over the Rams.
