FLUSHING, N.Y. – Playing with six players, the Queens College women's basketball team gave everything they had but the Knights would drop a 58-44 East Coast Conference contest to the visiting the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened
The Firebirds would open the game on a 10-2 run before freshman
Eldina Dervisevic (Queens, N.Y.) three-pointer started a 7-0 run to bring the Knights within one, 10-9 with 5:29 to in the first quarter.
But UDC would close the quarter on a 12-4 run taking a 22-13 advantage heading into the second quarter. Unable to find an offensive rhythm, the Knights would hold the Firebirds to 19.05 percent shooting on the defensive end and trailed by 10, 31-21 at halftime.
The visitors would open the third quarter on a 10-5 run taking a 15-point lead, 41-26 lead as they looked to blow the game up further with 7:47 to go in the third.
The Knights led by freshman
Jennah DeGout (Bronx, N.Y.) and senior
Nora Gabel (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) put on a 12-2 run over the final 7:47 to get within five going into the last quarter of play. Queens would hold UDC to 1-of-13 shooting in that run as they looked to rally back.
Playing shorthanded, Queens would eventually run out of energy in the fourth quarter and fall 58-44 on the day.
By the Numbers
DeGout led the Knights offense with her fifth double-double of the season scoring 13 points (4-of-16 FG, 5-of-6 FT), 22 rebounds (career-high), and six blocks (career-high). While sophomore
Aalia Carlson (Montclair, N.J.) tallied 12 points (4-of-10 FG) to go with three rebounds.
Notable: DeGout's 22 rebounds are the most rebounds by a Knights since MacKenzie Rowland brought down 21 rebounds against Dowling on February 18, 2016. It is the fifth time in program history that a Knights player has tallied 22 rebounds in a game.
While the six blocks are the most by a Knights player since Madison Rowland tallied seven blocks against NYIT on January 21, 2017. It is the third time in program history that a Knights player tallied six blocks in a game.
The 22 rebounds are the most in an ECC game this season overtaking Staten Island Jenalyse Alarcon's 21 rebounds against New Haven (Nov. 17).
Queens were held to 19.7 percent (13-of-66) from the field and 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from beyond the arc. While UDC shot 34.2 percent (25-of-73) from the field and 40.0 percent (8-of-20) from three.
UP NEXT: Queens continues a homestand as they welcome Mavericks of Mercy College to Flushing on Wednesday (Feb. 9) evening. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
